Sophie, age 3 1/2
AVAILABLE SOON
Sophie’s foster mom
reports that Sophie is a real sweetheart—she wants to be near you all the time
and loves to snuggle. She’ll give you a little nudge now and again if she wants
a pet. She loves grooming, too, which is a good thing: “Her new family should
definitely invest in a Furminator-type device to keep Sophie cool and
comfortable and be prepared to groom her regularly—she is super fluffy!” Sophie
is getting over ear infections, and though she doesn’t like getting her ears
cleaned, she is very cooperative with the whole process—now that certainly makes
life easier for her family.
Indoors, Sophie is
surprisingly good, considering she’s lived all her life as an outdoor Golden. “I
haven’t caught her chewing anything or digging
in the trash or counter surfing. She doesn't even beg for food.” Yes,
Sophie loves it indoors… to the point where she sometimes resists going outside,
so she has had a few accidents. Her foster mom has begun crating her when she
cannot watch her until Sophie gets the housebreaking thing down, and Sophie does
great in the crate.
In general, Sophie gets
along fine with other dogs, but she DOES like to have all the attention and
sometimes will be pretty cranky to another dog who comes up wanting a pat, too.
This is definitely something we’ll keep observing and working on with her—and
something for her new family to be aware of.
Sophie had a reputation
as an escape artist, but her foster mom says, “No more escaping! I guess that
was a ‘because I can’ thing, and she got over it—plus, I ruined any plans she
might have had by blocking her path.” Sophie DOES like to meander around
exploring the backyard, as long as the people are out there too.
She’s good with kids,
though she is a big girl and not always aware of her space. But at a birthday
party with lots of small children around, she was great with all of them.
Once Sophie gets a clean
bill of health and a little more “polishing,” she will be ready for her new
home!
Anyone suffering from double
vision?? We think we might be! In just the first week of June, we’ve taken in
three pairs of Goldens. Sister and brother
Mandy and
“Phoebe and Sophie—absolutely gorgeous Goldens”
That was the headline of an e-mail sent out as soon as these girls arrived in
foster care. Truer word was never spoken! They are beauties. The two sisters
grew up with a single loving, caring owner, but shortly after their third
birthday, life changes meant that she had to find a new home for blonde Phoebe
and red-gold Sophie. Up to date on vaccinations and heartworm medication,
healthy, freshly groomed—the only “work” these gals need is:
* A spot of dieting (to turn them from slightly plump to stunningly svelte).
* A little leash work; right now they pull like mad, but with practice they’ll
improve quickly.
* The chance to get used to indoor living. They’d spent most of their time
outdoors, but they already seem to have the hang of “potty outside”—on their
first night indoors, there were NO accidents. The owner told us they were
chewers, so we’ll be careful to keep “chewables” out of reach until we know
more.
These two sisters grew up with little kids and would even sit patiently to let a
6-year-old bathe them in a big washtub—but they ARE big, energetic girls, and
can knock small children over with out knowing it! Slightly older children might
be better for them.
One very important note: NO CATS, NO RABBITS, NO BIRDS for these two. They are
dedicated cat chasers, and Sophie has even caught birds. It’s possible that with
time they might come to accept a cat, but better not to take the risk.
The early report from their “overnight hotel”:
They are LOVELY! Sweet and affectionate, very people oriented. When I got home
from work, they were so happy to see me, as though they'd known me for a long
time. They were a little uneasy meeting our houseful of dogs—seven, including a
couple of houseguests. But soon they were sniffing noses, and really doing quite
well together. We have them together in the sunroom, and I have been in there
with them frequently, but whenever they are left by themselves, they have been
angels. They watch what is going on in the rest of the house, but there hasn't
been a bark out of either of them. They are incredibly well mannered. They ate
their dinner very politely. I tested them by messing with their food bowls
while they were eating, and neither of them showed any food protectiveness at
all.
They had a great night. I was up once with them at one AM; they went outside,
used the restroom, and went back in and back to sleep. This morning there were
no messes anywhere in the sunroom. What good dogs!
We headed to the vet’s and they rode in the car like champs, no whining, no
pacing, just two classy ladies watching the world go by. When we got to the
clinic, they just wanted to say hi to everyone. They are starved for attention,
and love everyone instantly. And everyone at the clinic fell in love with them
instantly, too! They are truly wonderful girls.
And Sophie’s foster mom says:
I got Sophie a couple of hours ago. She is a beautiful, sweet,
gentle dog. A little tubby and she needs a good brushdown, but she is
going to make some lucky family VERY happy! She hasn't put her mouth on anything
since she's been here, so the chewing is definitely not as big an issue as I
feared. She's a little tired, but I expect she'll be zipping around in a day or
two. More details to follow!
