Gary, age 5

AVAILABLE SOON HW POSITIVE

Gary will begin treatment for Heartworms soon.  Watch this space for his availability date.

Anyone suffering from double  vision?? We think we might be! In just the first week of June, we’ve taken in three pairs of Goldens. Sister and brother Mandy and Gary came into care on June 1,  and sisters Phoebe & Sophie, as well as Brylee & her friend Bowan, all arrived on June 6.

When volunteer Lisa spotted an ad for “two 5 1/2-year-old Goldens free to good home” in a local paper, she sprang into action & contacted the poster pronto. In these cases, we typically hear “oh, we’ve already placed them,” but not this time: Mandy and her brother Gary were still on the premises. Hooray! However: “Somebody IS interested in having them, & he’s coming by tonight.” That gentleman intended to keep the dogs as outdoor pets, though, and we couldn’t have that… especially not with another blistering Texas summer already moving in. “I’d love for GRR to take them and find them indoor homes,” said the owner, “but please, it has to be NOW.” She and her kids were staying with friends in a small house with a rambunctious pitbull pup, and things were beyond hectic.

The transport team went into overdrive (they’re used to it!), and soon the charming Golden duo had arrived at the vet’s for the full treatment. With the family’s finances tight over the past few years, regular heartworm meds had gone by the wayside, so unfortunately both Mandy and Gary are heartworm positive. But that’s about the only bad news there is, because personality-wise these two are sweethearts.

Here’s the early report from Gary’s foster family:

Boy, is Gary ever cute and excitable!  When I picked him up from the vet’s, he wasn’t the least bit hesitant about jumping into the SUV.  He rode really well, too. His introduction to our GRR Golden Brick went well and they became fast friends in record time.

He knows SIT and STAY, and he even waits to be asked to enter the house from the back door.  Impressive!  He’s housebroken, too. I can honestly say I have no bad behaviors to report!

He loves toys and greets us at the door with a toy in his mouth. He likes to retrieve them for you… in fact he’s a wonderful retriever, period. He drops his tennis ball at my feet and wants more (we’ll have to modify the tennis ball throw to a short, slow roll during his heartworm treatment, though). Interestingly, he’s not too interested in the pool so far.

Gary is pretty calm and even enjoys getting furminated. He’s outgoing, friendly, eager to please, playful and affectionate; his tail wags his whole body! He can be kind a goofy. He burps a lot. He kind of reminds me of Oscar Madison from “The Odd Couple”—in the cutest possible way!

Gary will start on his heartworm treatment soon, so he should be ready for his forever home well before the summer is out… and more than ready to hit the streets in costume on his sixth brirthday, which just happens to fall on Hallowe’en!
