All,

I had every intention of getting this out the first week of the new year but .....

First let's talk about the idosyncracies.
1) Winn, he only eats paper if you deprive him of socks and flip-flops!!!  :) Not a
problem, he seems to favor my wife and daughter's socks. Haven't lost one of
my own yet.
2) He must have heard us mention the high cost of flying. He has started digging
several holes in our backyard which he thinks will help us get to where he thinks
we want to go. Fortunately, he hasn't reached China yet. :)  By the way, our
backyard bermuda grass died off a few years ago. We haven't had a chance to
re-turf it yet. We don't care unless it's muddy. The holes aren't that deep. I think
Maya taught him how to do it even though she only tries to dig holes in gravel.
3) He is (mainly due to his size) the most efficient counter surfer I have ever seen.
So much so that he is on a diet consisting of 25% unsalted carrots. He seems to
like them.

Despite the above he is fantastic. Very gentle and extremely loving to all. I'm not
sure our gerbil thinks that is the case however.

Maya and he play fight all the time. I haven't weighed Maya recently but I'm sure
she has lost weight.

The last vet visit had him weighing in at 98 pounds hence the unsalted carrot
diet he is currently on.

We changed his food from Nutro Natural Choice Senior to Wellness Fish & Sweet Potato.
I had been cleaning out his ears 3X per week (brownish red stuff, not sure what it was)
plus he would rub his ears on the carpet. The vet suspected an allergy to the food
(since his inner ears were OK) even thought they said that was an excellent food.
They recommended the wellness food so I tried it and although the problem hasn't
disappeared he can go nearly 2 weeks now between ear cleanings and I rarely see
him rub his ears. Yeah, it's expensive food but he's worth it. If I add a little bit of
the new food to Maya's food she usually winds up eating more so at some point
in time they will both be on that food. Guess I'll need to get a second job. :)

Shadow is one great dude!!!!

My family and I appreciate all that you are doing. Please keep up the
good work.

Regards,

Dear GRR,

This is the story of Rocky.  We adopted Rocky into our family in August of 2003 while living in San Antonio.  Rocky a.k.a. to us as Rocket, Rocky Socks or Buddy is our second sweet golden.  Never in our wildest dreams did we ever think that we would become as attached to another golden as we were to our first golden, Jessie.  We were wrong!

Rocky is a handsome (now old boy) whom the entire family adores.  He has a sweet personality and is very obedient.  We love him very much and he loves us!

Rocky is now a yankee dog as we have moved back to our home town of St. Louis, Missouri.  He loves to play in the snow and chase snowballs!

Thank you GRR for matching us up with Rocky – he is a gem!

Sincerely,

Cia and Tom

Rocky

Hey everybody, follow the bouncing Kong and sing with me…. Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday dear Rocky, Happy Birthday to me!

Ok, so I’m a bit of an attention hound, but when you turned 3, like I will on September 29th, you probably wanted everyone to sing to you too! When I get to blow out my candles and make my wish, it will be for a loving family who will give me the best birthday present in the world…a happy, forever home where I can be the apple of your eyes.

I’ve had a really great life and I’m healthy as a horse (maybe a tad chunky but I’m working on that). My former family retired and wanted to take road trips. While I’m great in the car and love to ride, a boy’s gotta run and play at the end of the day. I just exude so much energy and enthusiasm for everything and everybody. It was a difficult decision for my former family to make, but they realized I need a family that will love and play with me and can keep up with my entertaining antics.

I am very smart, totally fun loving, and eager to please. I love my chest and tummy to be rubbed, and am working on having my head patted (I tend to raise my head up and nudge your hand down to my chest). I have allowed my foster mom to clean my ears, clip my nails and get my paws trimmed up. I have a fairly short attention span yet because there is so much to see and do! I am told that I am kind of puppy-like and that I would be fun to take to obedience class to learn how to interact with other dogs, since I’ve been alone since I was a puppy. I know and respond to many commands, and I have a whole list of information to show my new family about all the things I know and do.

Though I was outdoors during the day and got to come in and sleep in the house at night, I am totally housebroken and have had no accidents at all. I like treats and take them easily. I have many toys and love to play ball. I will give you the ball without any tugging or mouth-holding. I am working on not pawing my people, I just want their attention. I am trying really hard, and making great progress. I like to lick my people sometimes, and will even lick my foster siblings, which is how I let them know that I want to take care of everyone and am really happy that everyone wants to take care of me too!

So as I count down the days to my 3rd birthday, I am excited and happy to know that I’m going to find a forever home to share my big golden heart with. I am a lucky dog, indeed. Happy Birthday to me!!

Rowan ... Here's Rowan.. or “Ro,” as we call him. He came to GRR with his brother River and his sister Sage, after all three were dropped off at the shelter.

We are so glad to be fostering this little guy. Ro is smart-smart! A playful, loving kind of pup! He loves to sit and get a massage (don’t we all!)—he just melts. He is a little love-bug. His favorite toy is a stuffed bear; he carries it around, and if you throw it he will get it and bring it back to you. Some other favorites are balls, sticks, Kongs, water bottles (empty ones, good for teething)… he really just enjoys all toys.

Rowan is excellent walking on the leash with no pulling; he walks right beside you and gets a good trot going if need be. He loves to play with other dogs, take naps, and eat! He is learning to take treats gently. He is learning “off,” too – he does want to see what is on those kitchen counters!

Ro goes potty outside. He is good in the crate and sleeps all night. When we first put him in, he sometimes protests with a few barks, but then he drifts off to sleep. He doesn’t seem to have any fears… wants to be involved in whatever is going on! He likes the water and has done some swimming.

Rowan can't wait to find his forever home! Kids over age 5, other pets, you name it… Rowan will be a great addition to your family.

Update 08/24/07:

Rowan is really doing well. He is loving life! He has his regular morning “catch the tennis ball” game, and he is really good about bringing the ball back to you and waiting patiently for you to throw it again. He has lots of fun playing with his foster brothers and running around the yard. He walks proudly on his leash and takes in the great outdoors. He also enjoys a good nap—I discovered him snoozing on our La-Z-Boy one day!

He is still sleeping through the night and wakes us up around 7 or 7:30 in the morning with a sweet kiss and a sniff around the face :)

Rowan is doing better with the commands OFF and EASY. HE knows SIT and POTTY OUTSIDE, and today we started on SHAKE. No doubt he will master that one with ease.

Keep watching for more pictures of Rowan and updates on how he is doing!

Update 03/08/08:

Hi everyone,

Once upon a time there was a family who was ready to adopt another dog. They searched and searched but just couldn’t find the right dog for them. They knew they wanted a Golden Retriever and that they would like to rescue a dog like they did with their current one. One day the mom came across a website for an organization that placed rescued Goldens with families. The mom knew that this was the place for them to find the right match…and they did.

Rowan, who is now known as Cooper, was a very cute and very lanky 5 month old puppy who arrived at GRR with 2 litter mates. When the match makers told us he was our puppy we were ecstatic. We had been looking at the available dogs and coincidentally looking pretty hard at him. He turned out to be a great match for us, and we enjoy every day with him.

Cooper is a very energetic guy who came with some naughty habits that got him in a bit of trouble at first. After we realized that a morning walk eased his naughty side we made sure he got one every day. (The one day he didn’t resulted in his “cupboard surfing” and eating a meatloaf.) He still loves to dig and chew any toy that the kids may leave out, but that is not his fault. He is Golden through and through, and we adore every bit of it, good and bad. Cooper is a very smart dog and has learned some good doggie manners. He learns things rather easily, especially if there is a treat involved. He loves to ride in the car as long as he can sit in the back with the kids, and he loves to swim. He is very affectionate and will snuggle anywhere you allow him to-at your feet, in your lap, in your bed. J He is great with kids and loves people, however he has to remember to be calm around other dogs. He is working on this in his puppy obedience classes and really doing well (as long as the treat is there!) Cooper is very excited about everything and quite a joy to have around.

We can not thank the people at GRR enough for matching us up with the adorable pup. They worked so tirelessly to get things done and were quick to help out with any questions we have had. The foster family did a wonderful job caring for Cooper, and I know they miss him quite a bit. The couple who did our home study was thorough and encouraging every step of the way. The Gold Ribbon Rescue Organization has done an excellent job all around and should be commended. Too bad we are not here in Texas longer or we would try for another adoption with them!

Sincerely,
