Who comes to mind when you first hear the name “Carl?”

Maybe an old man with a few hairs short of a full head o’ hair. Loungin’ in his La-Z-Boy. Puffin’ on a pipe. Watchin’ ol’ Andy Griffith and Barney get out of some pickle.

Now who (in their right mind) would name a dog “Carl?”

Well, as soon as Gold Ribbon Rescue nabbed this boy, the transport volunteer made sure to introduce him to “The Good Life”—life as a GRR dog. So Carl the dog met Carl’s Jr. the hamburger.

Then they—both dog and driver—rolled through the drive-thru and ordered up a juicy cheeseburger—just to give ol’ Carl a taste of the life to come. Just for the record, the volunteer only gave him ˝ of the cheeseburger J.

And while Carl’s been in GRR care, this boy has been nothing but a wonderful addition to his foster family.

His foster mom can’t stop reiterating just how lovable and sweet he is. He seems to be a bit timid about certain things; his foster mom reports, “We cannot get him to go in our utility room for a drink, so we've brought his water to the kitchen.”

Though he seems afraid at times, his trust in his foster family has only deepened with time. After only a few days in foster care, Carl is free to roam in the house—he came to GRR housebroken (yay!) and enjoys relaxing with his foster mom’s other golden.  He also adores brushing but is a little sensitive near his rear legs.

When GRR rescued Carl, the previous owner noted that this golden boy doted on children and also got along with cats and other dogs.  Though he hasn’t been exposed to cats or kids while in foster care, look for an update as Carl spends a few more weeks in his foster home.

Unfortunately, this old boy has been battling some hip/spine issues.  When Carl went in for his medical evaluation, the veterinarian noticed a definite weakness in his hind legs and prescribed a regimen of a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement and a possible x-ray if his condition didn’t improve. His foster mom also noticed he struggled a little bit slipping around on their tile floor.  After picking up some doggie booties and strapping them on his paws, Carl just may become the next Speed Racer—but just as long as it doesn’t require him to go down stairs.  Heading down stairs magnifies his rickety back end.

His foster mom says, “He’s gotten so much more active and playful with his new booties; they just seem to give him such confidence.  Out in the yard as he walks around, he lifts his back legs as if he’s sort of prancing.  He sometimes runs using his back legs like a bunny—pushing off with his back feet both on the ground at the same time.”

Though there may not be any cheeseburgers in Carl’s future, seems this ol’ boy is content to lay his head at the feet of his owner, sharing in the antics of Andy and Barney, and waiting for the next commercial break for an ear scratch or a belly rub. Carl’s simply looking to be his owner’s new best friend; will it be you?
