Veterinarians should be immune to the charm of a goopy eared, flea and hookworm infested golden retriever.  Just another dog, just another day.  But when GRR swooped in and rescued Gretta, this petite little readhead, and brought her in for a complete work up, the vet exclaimed, “Gretta is such a sweetheart! She is a little shy at first, and then she warms up.  Gorgeous! Gretta was so nice that I would have loved to keep her myself! I’m serious!”

And after a few days in foster care, lovely Gretta’s gracious charm seems to have taken root in her foster mom’s heart too.  She says Gretta is calm in the house, and especially calm when she cleans her poor, little ears. She’s shy at first, but very sweet and loves attention.  She wants to play, almost as if she’s saying, “Look how pretty I am!” but she will also just curl up wherever you are. In fact, her foster mom thought Gretta would surely be a bolter. But just the opposite—Gretta seems stuck like glue to her human.

Because she’s on exercise restriction due to her recent spay, Gretta hasn’t yet had the opportunity to soak in the wonderful new life she’s found herself in.  It’s only a matter of time before sweet Gretta discovers that life as a Gold Ribbon Rescue dog is kind of like doggie heaven on earth—with an all you can “play” buffet of squeaky toys, tennis balls, and meaty bones.

But before she can move on to her forever home, her foster mom has a bit of work ahead of her.

Obvious from the moment she was picked up, Gretta needed medical attention—not only was Gretta suffering from poor nutrition and care, her ovaries and uterus were speckled with cysts after having birthed several litters of pups.  The vet immediately noticed her sunken eyes—is it possible she has the beginnings of dry eye? Or maybe it’s her poor nutrition? Could it be the beginnings of Kennel Cough?

Uh! This poor girl.  Though she does have some healing to do, one bright spot remains for this petite little redhead—she’s heartworm negative! Sweet Gretta won’t have to bear that physically taxing treatment.

As Gretta continues to both heal and flourish under GRR’s care, I’m sure that her foster mom is looking forward to more of Gretta’s signature “happy dances”—a four-legged pounce followed by a tail-chasing circle.

Gretta would be the perfect companion for any family—just as long as she is seen just as that—a companion.  Her days as a cast-off are surely over.
