Satin
#13-051 Satin, age 5 1/2
Weight: 74 pounds
AVAILABLE
When they were scooped up by Animal Control right after Tax Day, 5 1/2-year-old
Satin and her 3-year-old pal Jamie had clearly been on the road for a while:
they were tired and scruffy and skinny (the shelter staff immediately instituted
double portions to start padding those jutting bones a bit). Beyond that,
though, it was clear they hadn’t had attentive care in ages. Jamie had bad
infections in both ears, and as for Satin… what we first mistook for a
background shadow in one of her shelter photos turned out to be a huge growth on
her tummy, almost as big as a football. “It doesn’t seem to bother her that
much, she’s sweet and playful, but it looks pretty scary,” reported the shelter.
Both pups were intact, too, so the vet spayed Satin and removed that monster
lump at the same time. He was concerned it might be malignant, but a few days
later we got some great news: “rather bizarre, but quite benign.” The huge
growth turned out to be mammary gland hypertrophy—an overgrowth of mammary
tissue, with some fluid accumulation.
And a smaller, hard bump on Satin’s side was nothing more than a plain
old lipoma. Hurray!

After bouncing from countryside to shelter to vet clinic to foster home (with
major surgery in between), Satin understandably took a little while to settle
in. Her foster folks made sure to give her some space, peace & quiet – and in a
few days, she was ready to pal around with her foster brother Metro, another GRR
rescue. “She’d be fine as an only dog, but given time, she’ll accept a nice
laidback canine friend.” She’s still staying in her “private bedroom” (AKA the
laundry room) when nobody’s home, but foster mom and dad are confident that
she’ll be just fine loose in the house soon. She arrived housebroken (always a
pleasant surprise!).
Satin loves being brushed. After all, she does want to live up to her name & get
that golden coat soft and satiny. She likes to ride in the car, and would like
it even better if she could sit next to the driver. She is a counter surfer at
times, which isn’t surprising—it’s clear she missed more than a few meals during
her time as a stray.
Satin does like to dig, and like many a rescue dog, she has a habit of looking
for escape routes—she’ll test the gate and poke her nose up against the slats
for a peek outside. Her new family will just need stout, secure gates & a tall
fence, and they’ll want to keep her company out in the yard until Satin figures
out that she belongs right where she is… and she’s ready now to find that
forever home. Her stitches came out today, she no longer has to wear the hated
plastic conehead, and the vet has pronounced her in the pink of health!
