Exhausted after a long day’s work, you come home, eat a nice meal,
and hop in bed to relax. Whether you pull out a good book or click on the TV,
you’re looking for a way to wind down before you nod off into a restful sleep.
Well, what’s a better way to relax than having your very own 86 lb.
teddy bear to cuddle up with before you turn in for the night?
Lovable Mr. Magoo has a specific nightly routine, which in any
case, will soon become your routine if you choose to adopt him. Who could resist
such a sweet boy? Every night, Magoo hops up on the bed, snuggles close,
gives you a big slurp on your cheek, and then lays his head on your chest. He
doesn’t stay long though as he later hops off and curls up next to the bed,
settling in for the night.
Obvious from the start, Magoo is an extremely people focused
companion. While he’s been in foster care, he’s become quite the Velcro dog as
his foster dad warns, “Watch out while you’re reaching for your morning cup of
coffee.” Magoo stays right underneath your feet, and if you’re not careful, you
may get tangled up causing the coffee, the cup, or both to go flying.
His foster dad also says that Magoo is not the typical golden who,
when taking a family portrait, would sit perfectly still, minding his manners,
smiling for the camera. Not this boy! Magoo would be more like an
FBI agent on a secret mission: sneaking to the front of the shot and rolling
over for a tummy rub—before anyone would notice he’d moved a muscle! He’s crazy
for his tummy rubs!
Though Magoo seems like Wonder Dog, his only shortcoming is walking
on leash. When he sees another pup, Magoo can’t help but race over to
sniff the other four-legged stranger. Because of his size, this can mean
disaster for the human holding the other end of the leash.
Since his foster dad felt Magoo needed some serious help with leash
work, GRR set up a meeting with Margo Biba, GRR’s president, and Sheila Thomas,
GRR’s Education coordinator. After several experiments walking through the
neighborhood, observing his reaction to other dogs, both GRR experts feel Magoo
shows no signs at all of aggressiveness towards other dogs.
Thomas commented, “While on leash, it’s definitely a matter of
Magoo’s fear of other dogs. But it’s as if he says, ‘Well, I’m going to
check you out first before you can check me out. Once I know that you’re an ok
dog, then I’m ok too.’” He’s never snarled nor growled at another dog; he just
wants to sniff him.
In regards to his leash training, Thomas believes that Magoo’s
success solely depends on how much effort his forever family is willing to put
in—the more they work with him, the better he will become.
In fact, both his foster dad and Thomas report he is quite calm
around people, exhibiting a unique sensitivity to humans. Since he is so
people-oriented, Magoo might be a perfect candidate as a therapy dog.
And since he’s finished with his heartworm treatment, Magoo is
ready to finally meet his match. With a heart brimming with love to give,
he’s waiting for the chance to greet you with wet kisses and waggly tail.
GRR Golden Magoo doesn’t have much in common with his cartoon-character
namesake. Wealthy? Not exactly… his most recent owner purchased him in a parking
lot for $50. Short? Nope, this guy is a big, solid red Golden who tips the
scales at a husky 86 pounds. Near-sighted? We don’t think so… he sure can draw a
bead on any squirrel or bird, even at the far end of the backyard. But what he
DOES share with Mr Magoo is good luck – at least, starting now! There may have
been mishaps along the road, but the situation has worked out for him very
nicely indeed.
The friendly fellow came to GRR when his owner moved to a no-big-dogs apartment.
Time was of the essence, with the owner, the apartment manager, and GRR all
pitching in to get Magoo (AKA “Buddy-O,” to which he answers) whisked into GRR
care. Foster dad reports:
Very sweet, total velcro dog. Loves people and loves other dogs (we don’t know
about cats yet). Nice dark red color with a white dot on the top of his head, a
little white at the very tip of his tail, and a few little “splatters” on his
hind paws. Loves attention and tummy rubs.
His teeth look good, he’s got loads of pep, and he’s VERY strong! Pulls like a
train on a leash. When he doesn't want to go with you, he plops down and turns
into an immovable object. He does counter-surf, and he’s tall enough to reach
just about anything on the table. He hops into the back of the SUV with no
problems. Because of his size, it's
easy for him to push other dogs aside. So, I’d say he needs a home with no
toddlers—it would be no contest between Magoo and a tiny child.
Magoo loves to play with his GRR sister Melody. They’re both on exercise
restrictions (Magoo had his first heartworm injection on April 5, and Melody has
a heart condition), but if you don’t stop them fast enough, they burst out the
back door and race around the yard to chase off any birds or squirrels!
He bustles around so much that it’s hard to get a good photo of him, but as soon
as I do, I’ll send some pictures along.
