Barkley

#13-034 Barkley, age 1 year 2 months

AVAILABLE

Barkley, a young but LARGE golden, was recently taken in by Gold Ribbon Rescue. After arriving at his foster home, here’s what he has to say:

A ball?  YAY!  A toy?  Sweet!  A walk?  My favorite!

About a week ago, I wound up here, and boy, oh boy!  Being a Gold Ribbon Rescue pup is almost as good as going to grandma’s house! But more on that later.  I want to go all the way back to the beginning and tell you how I wound up here in my foster home.

For the past year, I lived with my momma who loved me so.  She took such good care of me.  I learned how not to potty in the house (YAY me!), how to play with other doggies, how to play with those tiny humans they call “children” (but not too tiny!), and how to go for a car ride (wheeee!).

In fact, my momma loved me so much, last year, she took me to Vermont while she worked as a children’s camp nurse.  She let me roam around freely with those kids, and — Oh, wait! I have to tell this story!  One day at the camp, I was supposed to sit on the shore of the lake and be the “look out” for the kids as they performed drills in the water.  But I just couldn’t stop myself!  I raced into the water and dove in.  Swimming right alongside them, when the kids popped to the surface, I did too!  When they dunked their heads, I did too!

But 80 lbs. of a wiggling fur ball is not for everyone—especially when I can’t seem to stop all these puppy behaviors. But I get so excited when a new friend comes to the door, or if momma puts the leash on me, or—come to think of it.  There isn’t a time when I don’t get excited!  I know she wanted me to have the best life ever—a life with a loving family and a gigantic yard.

Now that I’m living with my foster family, I’m learning the ropes of what it means to be man’s best friend.  I’m definitely trying, but trust me, it’s not easy! With the help of a few tasty treats, I’ve sort of grasped walking on the leash. And did you know that not everything is a toy?  Yeah. That was a huge life-changer.

Don’t let my size fool you.  Some people think I look more like a “pony” than a pup. Some people think I jump from one activity to anoth — Oh, look!  A yummy shoe.  Wait. What was I saying?  Oh, yeah.  Don’t let my size fool you because I am a pup who loves to cuddle.  When you come home from a long day at work, I will be waiting for you (with or without a shoe in my mouth).  And no matter how bad life’s circumstances seem to be, I will be there with my toothy golden smile just to show you how much you mean to me.

With a little bit of training and an extremely active family, Barkley could be the perfect golden boy for you. Barkley’s foster mom feels “He’s a great young dog, a real sweetie, who needs lots of exercise and room to run around.  He needs a household with lots of activity and plenty of love—either with children or other dogs for him to play with.”

Note: Barkley is a young and healthy pup, but due to his allergies, he will need to take Zyrtec and stay clear of grain and soy based dog foods.
