Though Shane may physically qualify as a “senior citizen,” he still exhibits that loveable “golden” spirit.  Because of his heartworm status, his foster mom has done her best to keep his exercise to a minimal level, but Shane just loves to pounce around.  And according to his foster mom, over the past few months, Shane has begun to open up quite a bit with his other foster pups—she says she “even saw him hop and play bow!”

Since Shane finished his heartworm injections, in two more weeks, this big guy will be ready to move to his forever home. During the 2nd set of injections, Shane had a couple of mild seizures, but his foster mom is taking good care of him—she scheduled an appointment with his vet to make sure Shane is feeling his best.

In the meantime, check out some action shots of Shane being kind of playful—because of his exercise restriction, foster mom says, “he would have ran and played fetch, but I was still trying to keep him relatively still during his heartworm treatment.”

And welcooommmme to Family Feud!  We’re back from our brief commercial break. We’ve got the top 8 answers on the board. We asked Gold Ribbon Rescue, a group of experts who specialize in placing golden retrievers into forever homes, the following question: Name a quality an adoptive family looks for in adopting a golden retriever.

And survey says…

potty trained…DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!

gentle with children… DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!

non responsive to cats… DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!

travels well in car… DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!

sleeps through the night… DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!

chews on appropriate toys… DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!

devoted to his owner… DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!

possesses a unique personality trait… DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!

And as promised, because of your on target answers, you’ve won Shane, the perfect gentleman who exemplifies ALL of these desired qualities!  Contact Gold Ribbon Rescue to claim your prize!

After spending some time with Shane, Foster mom states:  “He is an absolute sweetheart, super low maintenance, very calm, loves kids, is great with other dogs, and wants to be a foot warmer.  Shane even let my 3 year old dress him up as a princess.”

“He is a happy dog who just started his heartworm treatment on 3/18, but he doesn’t seem to be in a tremendous amount of pain.  The staff vets have fallen in love with him because he is so, so sweet and loving and just likes to sit with his head in your lap and be loved on.”

Due to his age, as expected, Shane does have some either slight arthritis or hip joint discomfort which causes him to slowly stand rather than pop up like a younger pup.  Though his achy backside may keep him from running or jumping, this may be a blessing for many potential adoptive families.

Shane’s foster mom commented on his other favorite pastime—you know, the one besides plopping his head down in your lap expecting a gentle rub: Shane loves to sleep in front of a lit fireplace or fire pit.  The last time his foster mom made a fire, she crouched down to load the logs in.  She then lit them, closed the screen, and began backing away almost tripping backwards over Shane. Curled up on his doggie bed in front of the fireplace, his eyes closed, Shane was ready for his fireside nap!

How to Win Friends and Influence People

By Shane, GRR #13-002

“Be yourself.”

What, a two-word book? That must be the shortest self-help volume on record! But really, what more is there to say? Where Shane is concerned, that really IS all he has to do to make friends wherever he goes: just be his own lovely self.

“Very soft personality. He’s a doll,” said our intake volunteer.

“Really sweet boy,” said the vet.

“Wonderfully sweet and loyal dog,” says his foster mom.

This charming older gentleman was found stray up north during the first week in January. He’d either been on the road for a while, or just neglected: he was covered in burs and big mats and mud. “Stood like a statue for twenty minutes as we got out the worst of the mats and burs,” said the intake folks admiringly. Unfortunately, stately Shane is heartworm positive (and will start treatment toward the end of February), but other than that he’s in surprisingly good shape. He DOES have a few lumps and bumps, and his joints are a little stiff; but heart and lungs sound strong, and his skin is really good despite signs that he’d had a pretty bad flea infestation recently. Even his ears are good! He could use a teeth-cleaning—and when he heads back to the vet for neuter surgery on February 11, his pearly whites will get a good polishing at the same time.

Meanwhile, Shane has settled right into foster care. “House-trained, no accidents. When we aren’t home, he’s free to roam in the living room, bedroom and breakfast room downstairs… no problems! He’s happy and calm with kids and with other dogs, too—he plays well, wags his tail and says hi, but his arthritis keeps him from really running with our pack.”

Shane loves his food and will ask for a bite of whatever you’re having—but he doesn’t bark or chew or tear things up or climb on the furniture. He loves to be brushed and he loves to keep his family company. “He wants to be near his humans all the time, likes to sleep on your feet and get as much petting as he can, but he never bugs you to pet him; he just waits patiently nearby. He would do well with another senior dog, or a puppy, or being the only dog in the house. Noise and children don’t seem to bother him. He just wants to be loved on a lot!”

In short, Shane is pretty perfect. Now all he needs is the perfect new family!
