Dancer

#12-175 Dancer, age 3 1/2

Weight:

MATCHED

HEARTWORM POSITIVE

Dancer’s foster home has already decided to make the arrangement a permanent one. Lucky dog! They’ll take him through heartworm treatment, and he should be all clear by early spring. Here’s his story:

“I am a male, brown Golden Retriever.

I am located in kennel OUTSIDE 04.

The shelter staff think I am about 3 years old.

I am currently available for foster, rescue or adoption. If you are interested, it is critical that you finalize arrangements prior to Dec 12, 2012 as I may be euthanized the following morning.”

When we (and several other rescuers who monitor shelter websites) saw that posting, it was time for a quick trip to the pound to  see what we could do. Luckily, our GRR volunteer was first in line to meet the friendly stray. He successfully placed an adoption application on Dancer (we picked a suitable holiday name), and then returned to pick him up bright and early on December 12. First stop: the doctor’s office, where Dancer was found to be heartworm positive, underweight, and suffering from kennel cough to boot. He’s taking meds and feeling better now, and needless to say he had a very happy holiday!

His new family sends this report:

We describe Dancer as the perfect dog. He is calm, sweet, and laidback, and just the perfect gentleman. Although he’s only about 3 or 4, his teeth are worn, as if he’d been chewing at fence wires or even gnawing at his fur to ease the itch of fleabites.

Dancer is happy to be with everyone in the family, from Dad on down to the teenage son, sleeping alternately in everyone's room.  It was obvious that he hadn’t lived with cats before, but he has quickly adjusted to life with felines. What a good dog! He is a smart fellow and knows SIT, STAY, SHAKE, and COME. The only thing he doesn't like to do is lie down on command, but he's learning.

He just wants to be with people and politely asks to be petted by walking up and sitting in front of you.  When you are done, he lies down, just happy to be near you.  He has deemed the couch his napping spot and really likes to have an arm draped over him while he takes a peaceful snooze.  He eats up any attention he is given as if he had been starving for that as well as food. We love him!
