Crash

Crash,  age 2

MATCHED

WEIGHT: 60 pounds

Update 11/20/12:

“New shelter boy!” read the e-mail on Hallowe’en. The shelter manager who pulled him out for GRR and kept him for a few days named him “Crash” – because the poor guy had actual  tire-tread marks on one leg and side. Amazingly, the leg wasn’t broken, and: “He’s doing well.  Bearing weight on his leg, but with tenderness and caution.  Wish I’d known about the injury when he arrived!  I could have ordered pain meds. Overnight staff didn’t realize he was hurt. So far, I have figured out that Crash likes soft, cushy blankets and bedding.  He’s been sleeping with a fleece blankie and pillow.  Takes treats softly.  Likes milk bones and Bil Jac Gooberlicious snacks and liver treats.  Real peanut butter and green beans & baby carrots are also high on his list. He’s definitely made me fall in love with him.   He’s got a lot of courage and moxie.  Plus, he’s a great snugglebug.   He would make a super library buddy for the special needs clients I serve. Hope you guys like him as much as I do!”

Crash’s foster mom agrees 100%! She says:

Crash is my first foster dog and is such a delightful boy!  He was named for the tire marks on his left front leg, and the name will still suit him long after his limp is healed.  He's just a puppy (somewhere between 1 to 3 yrs old), with gigantic feet that tell me he's not done growing yet!  He has a bit of filling out to do, but seems to be more interested in potato chips than doggie treats.  (However, he doesn't get people food in this house!) He IS a counter surfer, though, so beware what you leave behind!  I have also seen him carefully unzip all the pockets of a backpack to see what might be there for him.  He does this all daintily, but with purpose.  He will pull just one item at a time out of a small trash can as if each item is a special gift for him.  And, if the trash can is not in the right place (near or on his bed), he will carry it to the bed to inspect each item where he can comfortably recline during the investigative process. Clever dog!

He is such a character!!!  He is just learning SIT and is making some progress.  He walks right by your side, but is timid of his surroundings.  He is just a puppy after all!  He rides in the car quietly—although just this morning he was sick in the back seat. (It could have been the start and stop of the early morning traffic because he hadn't done that before, and he made the long trip from his out-of-town shelter to Austin just fine.)

He loves to cuddle in bed and has to be touching you with some part of his body all during the night.  He's already showing some jealousy of my cat, Rufus, and his position on the bed, but there have only been licks on the cats, no chasing or biting. He freely gives licks and kisses to everyone he meets. And he seems to prefer couches and chairs over sleeping on the floor, but will get down when asked. He was initially intimidated by my mom's walker, but he's gotten used to it now.  Sadly, he cowers to a raised hand. I think he just needs patience and exposure to everything in the world and lots of love and he will become a confident fellow.  He has seen the lake behind my house but has not idea what it is... so I'm anxious to see if he's a swimmer.  I'll bet he is given the size of his feet! He loves to play and chase balls although we have to tame it down a bunch while he heals from the accident.

Right now he is sound asleep under my desk where he will stay until I leave my office.  He's a velcro dog and so very, very gentle and sweet.  He deserves the best forever home we have!
