Topper, age 10

Update 9/15/12:

“This tiny guy is a mess. His ears appear a little short but they do cover his eyes. His coat, who knows, he is so matted, dirty, covered in stickers... He is small & under his fur he is skin and bones. He is shorter. The staff said he probably would not get adopted since he is old, really dirty, and so sad & depressed that he doesn't bounce up and wag his tail. I don't know… my gut says ‘Golden mix’ but my heart says who cares.”

That was our intake evaluator’s response when she met little Topper, curled miserably in a tight ball in the corner of his cage. The GRR intake team had the same reaction she did – might be just a bit of a mix, but let’s nab him anyway!

And as you can see from the photos, all it took was getting out of the stresses of the pound and getting cleaned up to put a smile on Topper’s face! Multiple baths and grooming sessions got rid of all the dirt, burs, and snarls, and now his honey blonde coat actually sparkles and stands out in a charming fluffy halo around his face. Yes, there’s a touch of something else in there, but this little gentleman is such a nice fellow that we know some GRR family is going to like him just as much as we do. For now, he’s concentrating on getting healthy. The fluffy fur makes him look a lot plumper than he really is – at just 32 lbs, he is a good 15 pounds underweight (that’s as if someone who should weigh 120 tipped the scales at only 80 lbs – Topper is really emaciated). Astoundingly, he tested negative for heartworms and intestinal worms at the vet’s, and his teeth, though he’s missing a few, aren’t bad. He’s a bit anemic and is enjoying liquid vitamins & iron on his meals to help address that problem.

In his foster home, he’s getting along in tip-top fashion (what else?) with all the other dogs. He does like to spend a lot of time outdoors, just observing; we suspect he was a yard dog in his former life. Right now he’s still a bit subdued, “but I think he act sillier as he feels better,” says his foster mom. We will let you know!
