Lexie

Lexie, age 1 1/2

AVAILABLE

Update 08/29/12:

Sweet Lexie came to GRR from a wonderful, caring owner who, due to a change in life circumstances, could no longer keep her young Golden Retriever. Lexie grew up surrounded by love and affection, and it shows! She’s the type of Golden everyone wants… she loves to be with her people.  She isn’t an attention hog, though, so if you have to stop petting her to do something else (not that anything else could really be more important!), she’ll just plop down for a rest beside you or find something to chew on. Note that this young gal can demolish stuffies and other dog toys quite quickly! She needs tough things to chew, like antlers and “extreme” Kong toys.

Because Lexie didn’t have a fenced yard to romp around in, she’s a bit pudgy at 90 pounds. She’s peppy, though, so with a yard and a family who can keep her active, she’ll slim down in no time to a weight of around 75 pounds, where the vet says she should be.

Speaking of the vet, Lexie did come with a sheaf of medical paperwork related to allergy issues, and she has some flaky patches of skin and thinning coat due to scratching at herself. The GRR vet has recommended a wait-and-see approach, so that we can find out just what Lexie’s allergy triggers are.   In the meantime, we’ve switched her to a carefully balanced raw diet to see if that will help to quiet her allergies and support her immune system.

This affectionate girl would do just fine as an only dog, but she sure does love to play & wrestle with her foster brother.  She’s great with visitors of all ages, kids to adults, after she gets to know them.  She doesn’t chase cats (although the cat chases her, poor thing!). She’s housebroken and is a great indoor dog—but she loves her crate and often naps there, so we crate her when we leave the house (as her previous owner did), since she seems to enjoy it so much and we don’t know what she might chew if left to her own devices for too long!

Lexie knows several commands really well; she just needs some more work on “down.”  She gets excited when she first sees us in the morning or when we come home, so a family with older kids who can handle her size would be great.  This blondie loves people and loves life!
