Liberty, age 2
MATCHED
Lovely Liberty Jane is already matched up
to her new home, but we like to give all our GRR dogs a spot on our website! So
here’s her story:
Only two years old, young
mom Liberty Jane came to GRR from a shelter way down south. After a long day of
driving, she stopped off at one of our “GRR Motels” for the night, and: “She was
an angel for her bath... stood real still and actually seemed to enjoy it. This
girl is smart! She is learning the ropes quickly and is teaching herself things
it has taken other foster dogs weeks to learn. Someone will be very lucky to
get her.” Her foster home definitely agreed! “Libby is very calm in the house;
she’s shy and gentle in everything she does. She is so good at night and has
been from her first night with us—we put down a dog bed for her, and she just
lies down when we get in bed and stays there all night.
Makes not a sound. During the day, she sits quietly next to us or follows
us wherever we go. Loves to be
petted and loved on. Has never
gotten into trash or anything of ours.
She is interested in our food
but does not beg. Has never jumped up on counter to take anything. What an ideal
dog!!!!!
Of course, no Golden can be calm and
quiet ALL the time, especially if she’s just a teenager, and Libby loves to go
outside to walk or play. She adores speeding after a ball! She runs right after
it and leaps in the air and brings it back, but getting her to let go does take
just a bit of work. She gets quite excited at the sight of cats, too, and is
eager to investigate.
“She is so endearing… just
wants to be close. She loves to be petted; you can just see her ‘melt’ and soak
up the attention. She just wants to be a loving and loved family member.”
In short, this sweet
little stray didn’t really need the full foster period to be totally adoptable!
She has already moved to her new home, and here’s an update on her progress:
Miss Libby
is getting comfortable and showing her puppy side!
She is just as sweet and loving as before, but add "expert sock thief,"
"occasional shoe chewer," and "junior counter surfer" to her personality!
She barks to let us know when our two-year-old is up in her crib,
and will not stop until someone gets her (“Somebody get that baby!”).
When the kids wake up in the morning or get home from school, her whole
rear end wags in excitement. She loves to fetch (still doesn't like to give up
her balls) and the kids are teaching her how to catch a frisbee.
Since she does nab a random toy or sock, we decided she would stay
downstairs, away from the toys.
However, she has never attempted the inside stairs, but waits patiently for us
at the bottom. She also has never
tried to get on the furniture. Her
previous home did not crate Libby, so we have not, either.
I was a little nervous when she had to be alone in the home for 4
1/2 hours the other day, but was delighted to come home to everything intact and
no accidents. We are so proud of
her! In addition, she shows her
sparkling Golden personality at meet-and-greets with any kids, adults,
or doggies that she comes across. In
fact, she is the first dog a 4-year-old in the neighborhood (who is terrified of
dogs) has ever petted. What a great
ambassador! :)
My 6-year-old is determined to get Libby a princess or cheerleader
Halloween outfit this weekend. We'll
have to post those on the Facebook page...
Needless to say, she's the perfect addition to our family!
It was the day after
a strong storm when the family discovered a scared dog huddled beneath a car in
their carport. Wherever had she come from? She was found at the end of rural
road in the midst of acreage—a 300-acre ranch on one side, a hundred-acre spread
on the other. She had no collar, no microchip. Calls to local vets, calls to
local boarding kennels (had a guest gone missing?), postings on Craigslist &
Facebook, flyers tacked to street signs, a shelter stray hold—no response. But
Liberty must have lived with someone who cared for her—she’s nicely socialized,
her fur was soft and clean, and she’s clearly accustomed to being indoors
(“absolute gem in the house,” says foster mom, and Liberty hopped up on the
bed as if she were perfectly used to sleeping there). The only hiccup to
an almost instant adoption is that Miss Liberty went into heat just a few days
after she arrived in GRR care – so, that spay surgery will have to be postponed
for a few weeks. That’s just fine with
* Gets along great
with kids – a couple of older children dropped by, and she was happy and calm,
with a whirling tail. Only jumps if you get her stirred up – otherwise, she’s
perfect with new people. (She loves to play with other dogs, but would rather be
with the people!)
* Best car rider:
lies down and relaxes, and will even curl up on the floor if she can.
* Takes treats like
a lady, with almost no teeth; very delicate, neat eater.
Quiet, calm sleeper.
And overall? “Very
outgoing, smart as a whip. Loving, devoted, relaxed, attentive. One of the
smartest dogs we've ever been around. Learned DOWN in two days! She's the
perfect sweetheart.”

Watch this space for Liberty's story as we get to know her better!
