Susy, age 7
AVAILA
Pretty, plump,
positive, and positively perfect with kids and other dogs!
Now who wouldn’t
want a dog like that?
Sweet, cheerful Susy
came to us from a caring owner who’d recently acquired her from someone else. He
soon noticed her occasional coughing fits and feared she had heartworms—and knew
his family couldn’t afford the treatment, so he called GRR. Sure enough, Susy
does have heartworms, but we’ll wait on the treatment until she’s dropped some
of her 30 or so excess pounds. Spay surgery is another thing that will have to
wait a bit, as anesthesia is a risk for dogs on the obese side. So, right now,
Susy is going through a heat cycle—AND, on top of that, she’s recovering from a
bladder infection.
Has any of this
dampened her spirits? No!
She knows how to
enjoy herself, whether it’s soaking up attention from children (whom she
adores), hanging out with the other dogs in her household, going on car rides
(as long as she gets a boost up), watching “dog TV” by observing squirrels out
the front window, or playing her special low-impact form of fetch, which
involves pursing a tennis ball gently rolled a few feet in front of her.
Susy also LOVES
being brushed and groomed, and as you can see from the photo, she’s a good sport
about playing dress-up! She’s also very agreeable to wearing “feminine
protection” to spare the floors and carpets from blood drips during her heat
cycle: “Susy is a BIG girl. The largest doggie diaper is too small.
So is the toddler size. Miss Suzy is a Ladies Depends size small.
It took two of us to get the diaper on her. Hole cut so her tail could
stick through. She just smiled and
wiggled. Too cute. We laughed and
laughed.”
Susy is a beautiful
girl inside and out, and she’ll look even prettier and feel better as she trims
down. To get the weight off, she’s supplementing her modest helpings of kibble
with plenty of fresh vegetables, such as carrots and green beans and broccoli.
If you are
interested in bringing Susy into your home sooner rather than later, we’ll tell
you all about diet, allowable exercise, and heartworm treatment. This dog is a
prize!
