Marcella

Marcella, age  4 1/2

MATCHED - HW Positive

Update 5/24/12:

Her rough pre-rescue fur has all been shed, and this pretty girl is now downright gorgeous with her super-soft platinum blonde new coat! She started her heartworm treatment on May 7, so she’ll be all finished at the beginning of July.

Says her foster mom:

Marcella is a sweetheart, so adorable and loving. She LOVES tummy rubs!  She will roll on her back and let you rub as long as you want. Loves loves loves to be brushed, too.  She likes to be with us but isn't needy and doesn't have to be with you all the time. As you can see from the photos, she’s very happy on her couch! She has never done any damage or chewed anything she shouldn't. She met a few children when we took her to the farmers’ market, and gravitated right to them. Her supersweet, calm nature makes it easy for kids to interact with her. She is the only dog in our household, but she has met other dogs on a walk and out and about and she did great.  No aggressiveness, just waggy and wanted to be friends. What a good girl!

Marcella doesn't freak out in storms, but she heads straight for my husband when it thunders and rains.  Wants to sit in his lap!

Healthwise, it’s been a bit of a rough ride for Marcella… first the infection at her spay site (resolved), then a respiratory infection (vanquished), then some tummy troubles (all is well now); and then her foster parents noted stiffness in her gait, some limping, & difficulty getting up at times, and had her hips checked on X-ray. As we’ve seen so often with Goldens, the actual dog and the X-rays are less than a perfect match! Marcella’s hips look bad on film… but, besides that stiffness, she really does quite well. “Walked fine when I observed her,” said the vet. She won’t be a jogging or hiking partner, but gentle walks (which she adores, and she’s great on lead) and swims are A-OK—and really important for her, to keep the muscles in her hips strong and her joints mobile. Another thing that will really help is good old fish oil, easily (and cheaply) purchased at any grocery store. And she’s taking the joint supplement Synflex, too. Bases covered—and no surgery needed! “She’s getting around better,” says her foster mom—but cautions that this darling girl is still a low-energy stroller, not a high-energy prancer, so not the dog for a family who wants a playful, bouncy, canine.

But if, on the other hand, you want an absolute sweetheart to cuddle up and keep you company, a beautiful blondie to get you out the door for leisurely walks that will give you plenty of time to smell the roses and meet all the neighbors … we have the dog for you!

Update 3/20/12:

She is SO pretty! Blondie Marcella was found wandering stray a few weeks ago & wound up at the shelter, where she was spayed and had a lump removed from her leg. The shelter had planned to adopt her out, but things suddenly got so crowded that the staff decided to put out an SOS to Golden rescue instead—and Marcella arrived in GRR care.

“Marcella is VERY sweet!” says her foster mom. “Met our other dogs with no problem. Happy and waggy.” But a day later, Marcella seemed lethargic and  a bit wheezy; and the incision site on her leg looked angry, too. It was back to the vet for a check-up. Turns out  she had a wound infection, a slight fever, and a respiratory infection, too, doubtless picked up at the shelter. With antibiotics and plenty of rest, she should soon be feeling Pure Gold once again.

More details to come…
