Checkered Past No Hindrance to Rising Star’s Popularity

There may be some gaps in his story, but Checkers has assured his ever-widening fan base that his lapses in memory are genuine. “I’m not trying to hide anything,” insists the handsome blond, who was “discovered” in jail by a South Texas talent scout. “I truly can’t recall how I wound up in the slammer! Anyway they let me off  without pressing charges and even set up a halfway house for me in Austin, so I figure it can’t have been anything too bad.” There’s been some buzz in the press about Checkers hiding a serious medical issue, too, but that’s one rumor he is happy to put to rest. “Oh for Pete’s sake,” sighs the energetic dog. “Yes, I have heartworms. That’s not great, but it’s not a catastrophe either. As soon as the vet gets the medicine I need, I’ll have a few shots and wind up with a clean bill of health.” The hardest part of the treatment for Checkers will be the necessary activity restriction—tough for an aspiring action star like him to handle! “I do like to stay on the go,” admits Checkers. “I’ve even been approached by the pro wrestling circuit. I told them NOT INTERESTED but I do enjoy a good, rowdy  wrestling match with my pals.”

One thing Checkers assuredly WON’T be turning out for is the Nascar circuit. “Riding along is OK, but I don’t really care for getting into cars,” he confesses. “Squashing myself into one of those flat-looking race cars? Forget it!”

Checkers knows that once he hits the big time he’ll be on show at various high-profile events, so it’s never too early to polish those social skills. An accident on the red carpet? <GASP> Unthinkable! Luckily he’s completely housebroken.  Jumping on the other guests, talking (barking) a lot during the speeches,  and veering away from his handlers to check out something interesting? These will take a bit more work. Right now Checkers DOES bark for attention, and he likes to mouth/nip/nose for attention, too. “Don’t worry, I plan to become more suave as soon as possible,” he promises. He’s already learning to SIT on command and walk nicely on lead.

What about the gossip concerning a possible foot fetish? “Not feet… shoes,” corrects Checkers, acknowledging that he might have a hard time with this particular temptation at a celebrity bash. “Then again, any shoe is fine with me, so maybe I can chew on an old tennie or something instead of yanking off all those Jimmy Choos and Christian Louboutins and carrying them away,” he offers. “The thing is, it’s really hard for me to give up a shoe once it’s in my mouth, and I know the ladies wouldn’t appreciate that.”

Looking good is part of being a star, and Checkers is learning to enjoy the whole grooming process, though “sometimes I just have to grab and bite the brush.” Likewise he’s doing his best to get the full eight hours of beauty sleep, but if anyone gets up during the night, he likes to come over wagging his tail & wanting some love/attention/play time. It’s all part of his social nature!

Everyone who’s met this rising star describes him as “super sweet and a fast learner.”  Come meet him and see all that star quality for yourself! He needs a family who can give him love, attention, and training as this smart fella continues his rapid rise to fame!

Checkers is so techno-savvy, he even has a Facebook page!  Befriend him at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Checkers/316860524998049  :-)

* Due to the nationwide shortage of immiticide, the drug used for anti-heartworm injections, our heartworm-positive dogs must wait to begin their treatment—for weeks or months, depending on when the drug becomes available again. In the meantime, they will start on a course of doxycycline, which may help (in conjunction with Heartgard) to kill adult worms more quickly. If you would like to adopt Checkers before he begins HW treatment, just let us know! We will cover the cost of the injections with one of our GRR vets as soon as it’s possible to begin treatment.
