On November 1, Irish Setter rescue received an SOS from a shelter in far South Texas: “We have an Irish Setter mom (not sure if she is full blooded) and pups here. We have only until Friday this week to place them before they are euthanized. If anyone can help, we would appreciate it.” Irish rescue took one look at the photos and bounced them to GRR: “Can you help these red Goldens?” As we later learned, young Petunia and her two adolescent daughters, Priscilla and Penny, had been picked up by Animal Control a few times—and this time, the owner declined to reclaim them.
In one more day, the little family was on the road to Austin. “All three are really about the same size, look pretty skinny,” reported the girls’ “chauffeur.” “The 2 babies are scared.......lots of panting and drooling. Mom is starved for affection and responds well to our cooing. What is it about Goldens, no matter how poorly they are treated, they still reward you with that unmistakable look of unconditional love! I do think they know things are going to be better for them... I sense relief!!!!!!”
The entire trio is being treated for intestinal parasites, but luckily, Priscilla and Penny are HW negative.
Penny’s foster mom sends this early report:
Picked up Penny this morning and she is just darling. She is a small (only 36 pounds), skinny beauty who is petrified of most everything so far! She hated the car ride home and drooled incessantly (I sat in the back seat with her though and talked and petted her the entire way). She shivered and ducked the first hour or two whenever I put my hand near her head to pet her and had her tail between her legs most of the morning. We went for a short walk this afternoon, just four houses out and back, and she was easy on the leash and did her business outside, for which she was wildly praised of course! She seems eager to please, and I think she will train very easily... a smart cookie this one. She may be an escape artist (we'll have to see) as I've been unable to contain her with a baby gate at all, but I have a crate and can use that if need be. She’s very interested in checking out what’s on the counters, but when I tell her “no” she gets down immediately. She has mostly followed me around the house and is asleep at my feet while I type this. She is sweet as can be and I know she will warm up to the hub-bub in our house!
I’ll get a better feel for Penny’s temperament/personality as she begins to feel better from her surgery and gets more comfortable and trusting in our house. So far, she seems a bit afraid of our Golden, Cupcake. Cupcake has been wonderful, though, giving her space to get adjusted and the two have barely sniffed each other. When Cupcake wanted to roughhouse and Penny wasn't receptive, Cupcake barked at her a few times and then just sat down near her. Penny was mildly interested in our cat, but did not approach him.
