Katee
Katee, age 12
AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION
Katee took a quick
trip to the vet this week—she’s been having a few little accidents. The vet put
her on a couple of different meds to help. “Her bladder is a little irritated,
and probably it’s partly just her age,” he said.
However… Katee
prefers to forget her age! She can still kick up her heels and act like a puppy.
Her foster mom reports:
My friend and fellow
doggie foster mom Juilene came over with her four kids for a pool party.
They played and splashed and threw Frisbees in the water.
The dogs would jump in, swim to the Frisbee and swim back.
Katee Belle forgot that she is the oldest dog in the household and dove
in again and again. She out-swam the
younger dogs and each time would relinquish the Frisbee to one of the kids with
a gentle mouth. The littlest child
(four years old) would jump off the jump rock and Katee Belle would jump in,
swim to her and tow her to the ledge.
She did this over and over.
Even when the little girl was tired and sat on the edge to rest, Katee Belle
would nudge her to give in and do just one more jump.
I am the one who finally decided that Katee herself needed to rest and
took her indoors! She let me know
she disagreed by giving me a good loud bark-bark-bark.
I thought she would be exhausted tonight, but instead, she has a little
spring to her step. What a great old
gal!
Meet Kaitlin Belle—Katee
for short—a wonderful lady of many, many accomplishments! As a young girl, Katee
was trained as an assistance dog, and she spent her first few years helping her
person every day. She was constantly on the go—to the market, the movies,
restaurants, you name it. Sadly, though, her person passed away, and after that
Katee became a well-cared-for pet Golden who didn’t really need to use all the
skills she had been taught.
Although… as we all
know, “it’s all in there somewhere,” and Katee never completely forgot her
assistance training. She was surrendered to GRR by an older gentleman who is
getting ready to do a lot of
travelling, and his son told us this amazing story: “My mom passed away a few
years ago, but about 6 months before that, she had a bad fall when home alone
and actually knocked herself out. When she came to, she managed to phone my
brother for help but was unable to stand up; she lay on the floor until he
arrived. The incredible thing is that where she fell down was very far away from
the phone, yet when my brother arrived, the phone had been carried over next to
Mom. The only other ‘person’ home at the time was Katee. One of things she
learned as a young dog was to bring things to her owner—phone, purse, whatever.
Mom was unconscious for a bit after the fall & when she came to the phone was
next to her. We are quite sure Katee brought it. What a dog!”
In her foster home,
beautiful Katee is in seventh heaven with lots of kids, lots of other dogs, and
lots of attention. What fun! Her foster mom says:
She is so good. She is
supersweet and totally trustworthy. We have been calling her Katee Belle, which
she answers to. She gets along well with all the dogs, even cranky old Sabrina.
If she is chewing on a bone or a toy and another dog looks at it, she takes it
to them. So sweet.
She LOVES the pool and
immediately jumped in. She’ll take dips all day if you let her! A forever home
with a swimming pool would be fantastic for her.
She has had a great time
with a houseful of teenage boys; she was chasing them and playing tag with them.
And if anyone has a sorority in need of a house mom, Katee would be perfect for
the job! We had a bunch of kids come here after prom night. Katee lay down by
the front door and did not leave her post until everyone had safely arrived. She
then monitored them going from the TV area to the kitchen to the “bar” for sodas
to the spare room where girls were trying to undo their hair and make-up. If
they were getting too loud she would give them a quiet woof. If they were
getting too crazy she would go over and lay her paw on them. I went to bed
before she did! And ALL of the other dogs went to bed way before that.
At 3:40 AM she finally came upstairs and pawed at the door and gave a
quiet “woof woof” and I let her into the bedroom.
Before going over to her bed, she walked around the room and checked on
all four other dogs. Next morning my husband had to get up early and go into
work. She got up with him and went
down and spent time with him while he had his coffee.
Katee does have a little
bit of stiffness in her joints, but that doesn’t stop her from running around
playing with the other dogs.
I love this old girl!
She can stay here as long as it takes!
