Nemo

Updated 5/6/11

Nemo, age 7 1/2

MATCHED

Nemo has been matched to his forever home and is not available, but be on the lookout for more like him!

Nemo’s owner had to give up her curly blond pal when she learned she’d have to move out of state while pursuing her studies—and what’s more, she’d be living in a tiny apartment in the middle of New York City. She knew that a big Golden would need lots more room and lots more time than she would have, so she contacted GRR for help.

Nemo’s foster mom gives this report:

Nemo is adjusting great!  In fact, he quickly made himself right at home.  He has just the right amount of energy.  He is content lying on the floor with a toy or going for a nice walk.  He’s so easy going that whatever you want to do, his response is “I   couldn’t agree with you more!” He’ll be right by your side no matter what you are doing.

Nemo is a well-educated gentleman who already knows all of his basic commands (sit, stay, down, etc.); and he does not beg, grab things off the counter, tear things up, or do anything else naughty. He’s an extremely fast learner who is rapidly mastering all our “house rules.” He tried to jump up on the bed, but since that is not allowed here, he got right off as soon as I said "off" and has not jumped up since. At first, when he was offered a treat, he’d grab it out of your hand, but after just a few days of instruction, he knows what “gentle” means and is much more delicate.  Of course, the does have the occasional memory lapse when it’s one of his favorite treats, but he’'s trying really hard to make“gentle” a habit!

I was warned that Nemo was a bolter and would dash out the front door if given the chance.  I can't say for sure that this habit is broken, but we have figured out a great method to make sure that he does not get out.  I’ll have him sit a few feet from the door, then back away and tell him “stay” while holding out my hand.  This gives me enough time to get out the door, and enough time AND space to stop him if he decides now is his chance to make a break for it.  So far, this system is working well, so we'll continue to use  and hopefully he’ll lose the “bolter” label soon enough!

Nemo is great with people and other dogs.  He loves to play and can keep up with even the young pups out there!  His favorite thing to do is run around the backyard squeaking a toy trying to get his foster brother and the neighbor dogs on the other side of the fence to chase after him.  It seems that the younger dogs tire out before he does.

This is the most ticklish dog you will ever meet!  He loves belly rubs and as soon as you start to pet him his back legs go flying in the air with excitment.  He can’t get enough of it!  He even tickles himself sometimes when he is itching!

Nemo’s most recent favorite hobby is Skyping with his foster dad in Iraq.  Nemo wishes he could Skype all day with him, but knows there is work to be done there.  He can’t wait to meet him in person to see what he really looks like!

Oh, and of course Nemo is totally housebroken and sleeps peacefully all night long.

More Nemo news as we continue to learn more about this great dog!
