Jakey

Updated 1/28/11

First, a correction – upon reviewing Jakey’s paperwork, we find he has just turned seven. Seven, five, eight – Jakey doesn’t care, and neither should you, because at any age, he’s wonderful. His foster mom sends this update:

What a sweet boy!  Who could reisist his charms?  Jakey is the perfect gentleman and the most easygoing and laidback guy.  He loves to go for walks around the neighborhood and is very good on leash.  When the Labs next door start barking he won’t even give them a glance.

Jakey and our dog have an agreement about toys and beds.  First one to get it wins. I never know which bed either one will end up in or which toys go with whom, but they never argue!

Jakey’s main concern is knowing where his people are and seeing how close he can  curl up nearby. His in house manners are near perfect. He does like to take a drink from any nearby toilet with the lid up, and in the absence of something to gnaw on, if there are Kleenex in the waste basket, he will shred them into tiny pieces and leave them all over the floor. Thank goodness he has shown no interest in chewing shoes or leather sofas!

When we must leave the dogs, we are able to let him roam the house freely. He goes to his bed and sleeps until we return.  When we are outside working in the garden, Jakey is happy to flop on the porch in the sun and watch.  He does not seem to know how to play.  He does not retrieve.  We thought our dog might teach him to go after toys we throw, but Jakey wants to come lie down right under my feet and watch our dog do all the work.  When she gets tired of retrieving he will then pick up the toy and take it off to sleep with.

Jakey would be a great apartment dog or the perfect dog for someone who prefers calm, mellow, and companionable to feisty & active. Anyone who wants a supersweet, quiet dog to snuggle up with will love this big boy!

Big, blond, and handsome, Jakey  came to GRR when his family had to move. This wonderful guy has a slightly unusual profile – his jaw looks a little funny, and some of his teeth (top and bottom) are missing. Why? Well,  when Jakey was just a tiny fellow, a nasty little boy who was visiting the family conked the new puppy in the face with a bat. Jakey had to have surgery. Luckily, he came through it fine, with his Golden personality intact, but he does have a distinctive look as a result!

Jakey’s foster mom says:

There is only one way to describe Jakey.  He is a big, huggable, adorable teddy bear of a dog.  I don’t know how anyone could resist his charms!  At age 5 he is past the wild days of his youth and is perfectly willing just to hang around with his people.  We brought Jakey home to foster on December 20, and he settled in immediately, as if he had been here his whole life.  The first thing he did was take over the dog bed we had put in our bedroom for him, devour a chew and then have a nice nap. Jakey sees dog toys and Kleenex… and bathroom tissue rolls… and, well, really anything that looks interesting at the moment, as a potential chew.  We learned quickly to provide him with something to do with his mouth at all times! He is housetrained—absolutely no problems there. He rides in the car like a champ. He DOES snore at night, perhaps again as a result of the Bat Incident in his youth.

It was not surprising that Jakey gets along fine with our Golden, since he came from a home with two other dogs.  They eat side by side and go out together without any squabbling at all.  A few days ago at dinner time, Jakey was lying on his side on our breakfast room floor. When I called the dogs to eat, he just lay there wagging his tail and looking at me with huge brown eyes.  My husband picked up his dish of food and put it down in front of his nose.  Jakey proceeded to eat his entire meal without moving from his side.  It was hilarious!  Perhaps he was a Roman emperor in a former life and is used to having servants feed him grapes while he reclines on a sofa! I have a feeling we will not have him for long.  Some lucky family is going to snap him up!
