Sam the Man

Updated 7/06/10

It was that typical vicious circle: young dog doesn’t get enough attention, gets wild, therefore gets even less attention, therefore gets wilder, gets destructive, tries to run down the people when they go back indoors to leave him alone yet again. Heartbreaking! Luckily for Sam the Man, his family knew that a different home would suit him much better, and made arrangements for him to come to GRR.

His foster mom says:

Sam is a normal, pretty, well-behaved youngster. He is fabulous with our Goldens, and he lived with another Golden and a couple of mini-doxies at his first home. He loves to retrieve  & is very good at letting you have the ball. No jaws of life needed to crank open this guy's mouth! Sleeps peacefully all night and doesn’t pester you to get up too early. As for grooming, well, let’s just say grooming & ear cleaning would appear to have been a  rare event in  his life. We have trimmed mats mixed in with burs from  behind his ears, on his legs, tail, under belly to the extent  I had to doublecheck that he was not intact lest I  was performing an impromptu neuter with a pair of scissors! He put up with it all.

He pulls on lead but he’s not the worst I have seen by a long shot. I think intially he will be timid in new situations so I'll take him to our local Petsmart to walk around the strip shopping center. He still finds car rides kind of stressful, turns into a limp noodle and has to be lifted in and out. All in good time!

Sam needs an active home. Older kids (10 and above) who know how to act around a dog would be fine, and another dog buddy would be great, too, especially if the family doesn’t have a stay-home adult. I'm just so thankful his first family was willing to let him go! Sam would not have been happy always in the backyard, with no opportunity to develop manners and no chance to become someone’s very  best friend.
