McLovin
Updated 6/21/10
Hi! McLovin here, reporting from my new foster home. Now don’t go thinking that I got myself moved because I was naughty. Nope, nothing like that! My foster mom had an emergency come up, so the folks at GRR found a new home for me.
Being moved around can be tough on a pup, but I’m a resilient fellow and these new adventures are helping me discover my inner-dog. For example, I’m now living in a home with three goldens and a rabbit. Yep, that’s right…a rabbit. He let me know right off the bat that he wasn’t going to put up with me nosing around his cage. Scared me to death, so I’m steering clear of long ears and twitching noses. I’ve learned I like hanging out with canine pals, especially 10 month old Aspen. I’m always a gentleman with her. She loves to drag me all over with our tug toy, and I just lie down and let her. We love to chase each other round and round the dining room table, until Mom makes us stop.
I’ve also learned how to sit and wait my turn for a treat. With four dogs, it seems like it takes forever for my treat to get to me, but I wait patiently like the others. Oh, yea, when food is being served, I sit and wait until I’m told to eat. Mom says I’m genteel. I think that’s a compliment.
Mom and Dad had to leave me one evening for almost six hours, and I took a nice long nap. I might be young, but I’m a calm guy who can be perfectly happy snoozing time away.
Let me tell you about cats! I visited a house that had five of them. WOW! I’ve never seen that many cats in my whole life. One was lying on the sofa, so I walked over real gentle like and gave him a sniff. He looked up at me, and then got up and came towards me. That scared me, so I backed up to Mom. One guy zipped past me. I danced little jig, wishing I could accept his invitation for a game of chase. Then another one hissed at me when I started towards him. I left that feline alone; he reminded me of the rabbit at home. After a few minutes the cats weren’t all that intriguing, so I stretched out on the floor and cleaned my feet. When it comes to cats, I’m a normal dog. If a cat invites me to chase him, who am I to say “no”, but if one comes towards me or is mean, I’m movin’ on.
We did the most awesome thing! We loaded up in the car - all four dogs in the back of an SUV- and went to the lake. I showed everyone that I can swim. Playing in the water is so much fun, and I had a blast plowing my nose through the waves. My three dogs friends like to retrieve balls and Frisbees, so I joined right in. I helped Aspen and Sassy bring the Frisbee back. Guess what else I learned? I may have some nautical blood flowing through these veins. Haven’t sailed the seven seas, but I hopped right into a kayak and took several spins around the lake. Take a look at my picture, and you’ll see what I mean.
Gee, I love it here, but I sure would like a forever home. I’m a lovable companion (hence my name) and love adventures. Mom says I’m smart and learn fast, so I just need someone who is willing to teach me what I’m suppose to do and love me as much as I’m going to love them.

Nothing says lovin’ like a Golden Retriever… so coming up with a name for this handsome stray boy was not difficult. He’s as loving as they come—but he sure didn’t get as much lovin’ from his first owner as he should have. He came to us from a small shelter, and here’s what the director told us:
“His history is that on the evening of March 21, I received a call that someone had witnessed a yellow truck pull over on the highway, open the door and push out two dogs. On March 22 I sent our police officer, assisted by my husband, to retrieve these dogs. That was not hard to do; they were very hungry and jumped right into the truck when presented with kibble. They were taken to the vet clinic where I send all the strays, for evaluation and medical treatment if required. No owner was found and no one came forward within the required 3 days andthe animals were put up for adoption or for a rescue to take.”
McLovin’s pal went to another rescue, and he came to GRR. He was a complete Live Wire at first – he’d been confined in a small pen and was a bit bonkers! Since then he’s settled down, though of course he is STILL an active young guy who needs lots of play and exercise.
His foster mom’s report:
Healthy, outgoing, friendly; pretty fur and beautiful teeth! Happy guy who almost constantly wags his tail. He’s housetrained & hasn’t had any accidents, though I do crate him when I am not at home. (He has done some “investigation” of the trash basket.). He pulls some on lead, but is rapidly improving. He does jump up & we’re working on that. He just wants to be loved and the closer he can get, the better he likes it. But he is very smart and learns FAST, so he’s getting the idea that people do need a little personal space! He makes me laugh with his antics.
With other dogs, he’s cautious at first. Careful, gradual introductions are the way to go with McLovin. He does NOT seem to like cats, though—so a no-cat home would be best for him.
Just about any active home with time to spend on training and exercise would suit this loving Golden to a tee.
