JoeJoe
Update 5/11:
From JoeJoe’s latest foster report:
I love this dog! He is obedient, outgoing, sweet, and friendly and mostly just
loves to be near you. When you call him he comes. He doesn’t bolt at all; in
fact, when I let him out, he always looks back to see if I’m coming too. We call
him Joe Joe Bean. He is so very sweet . He would be good as only dog or with
another dog. He seems to be OK alone. He hasn’t been left more than 5 hours at a
time, but we haven't had any trouble. Never has chewed anything while I've been
gone and only when I'm here does he get in the trash at times. It would be great
if some one wanted to take him through his HW treatment. He really is just the
best dog!
For a 10 year old he is very agile. He can run up the stairs and he is little
twinkle toes as he lightly prances out on the lawn and back.
JoeJoe loves to chew on antlers and bones. And he loves his food! If I don't
close the top on the dog food bin, he will flip the top with his nose and stick
his head in the bin and start eating. He chomps very loudly so I always catch
him. I took a photo of him with his head in the bin because it was so cute! My
fault, I have to be careful to make sure it's closed. He will go and test it out
during the day.
He now gets in the car and out of the car just fine. He loves walks. I like the
fact that he is not a big barker, even when he sees deer in the yard. He’s very
curious but does not bark. Now if given the chance I do think he would run after
them!
It would be wonderful if someone would take him through heartworm treatment. He
is so very gentle and sweet. I know I said it before, but I just love this
little dog!

When JoeJoe wound up at the pound, the staff promptly contacted GRR. Our intake director was on the case pronto. “JoeJoe was turned into the shelter because the owners had a life change,” she e-mailed. “Shelter says he has too much zip to go on the put-to-sleep list. HW positive, intact… Plus, this guy looks like he has NEVER ever had any grooming at all. Per staff he is a sweetheart.”
Well, the former owners aren’t the only ones having a life change. JoeJoe is getting one, too, and it’s all good. First things first: a check-up, neuter surgery, and off to a foster home to put some padding on his skinny frame (he weighs a mere 54 pounds and needs to gain at least 10 or so). Then it was time to tackle those matted ears and overgrown paws… and… “He is the greatest! He was so shaggy and his paw hair so long so I got the brushes and scissors out the day after I picked him up and was able to trim all his paws and brush him. He seemed to love it and stood very still. He was just wonderful. Now he looks very handsome. He is a well-proportioned Golden with great fur and a very cute face.”

JoeJoe likes to go out walking, and it’s clear that he would love to just kick up his heels, but due to the heartworms and the recent neuter his foster mom is trying to keep him quiet for now. But, “I can’t believe this little guy is 10. He looks and behaves like a 5-year-old. Very outgoing , lots of energy. I call him Twinkle Toes as he is so light on his feet! He is not a bolter though. He will go out on the front porch into our little fenced yard and if you don’t come out with him, he will quickly run back in. I can’t wait to see if he fetches.”
JoeJoe did NOT like the car… he had to be hoisted in, and then he didn’t want to get out and flattened himself. But once his foster family managed to pull him out, he soon began to investigate his new home. Car rides will be something to work on in future for sure!

But other than that, well, he is just a peach. And well-educated! “He seems housebroken, and he knows his commands and comes quickly when you call his name. He will SIT when you ask him to, and he even knows LIE DOWN.. He is really a cool dog and I can’t understand why anyone would want to give him up.. He wants to please and is just a happy Golden. He would do well as only dog. He is so gentle I think he would do well with kids too.He has only been here a few days but we all love him already. Very sweet guy.”
