Tracker

#10-038 Tracker, age 7

Weight: 61 pounds

AVAILABLE

Updated: 08/14/13

Tracker laments the fact that he lacks opposable thumbs – if he had thumbs, he would master the Rubik’s Cube within minutes.  This incredibly smart boy is a true diamond in the rough.   He has a bright and active mind that thrives with mental exercise (like puzzles) coupled with physical activity. Tracker’s fun IS training!

His foster was pleasantly surprised to find that Tracker has the potential to become a fantastic agility dog. She describes him as being “very visual, loves to follow hand signals, and needs activity.”  If her house wasn’t already maxed-out on personal dogs, she would have loved to adopt Tracker.  That’s unfortunate for his foster but definitely a win for the family that adopts Tracker.  He is housebroken and will let you know if he needs to go out.  He also loves his crate and will readily go into it with a human hand signal.  He enjoys car rides, walks well on a leash, and loves getting groomed.  Playful and loving, Tracker needs a family that will set boundaries and teach him how to be a proper canine citizen.

Idle paws lead to silly antics.  Boredom frustrates Tracker, but positive redirection and focus will transform this beautiful dog into one of the smartest Goldens out there. Tracker is looking for an active and patient family that will take him to training if they’re not well-versed in dog training.  His foster simply summarizes his case as such: “He wants to please so badly, but has never been taught, until now, how to accomplish that.”

In Tracker’s previous life, he lacked exercise and attention, so he licked himself out of boredom until he developed a lick granuloma. Thankfully, his granuloma healed and he hasn’t regressed into boredom-licking ever since he’s now receiving the attention and energy outlet he so greatly deserves.  If you positively share and include him in your life, he’ll happily repay you with good behavior and continue to surprise you with his intelligence.  His training regimen focuses on positive reinforcement, and he has proven to be an incredibly great student.  He re-directs beautifully and truly thrives on re-direction.  He simply needs to be shown what right looks like, and as each day passes, he has shown incredible growth in model behaviors.  This guy is a fast learner.

He hasn’t quite caught on to retrieving balls yet – he will chase after it, but he is quickly learning what joys a simple ball can bring.  When he’s not frolicking, he loves to curl up on the sofa next to you. He’s high drive but certainly not crazy since he is calm indoors.

Tracker will flourish with an active adult family that is interested in doing fun dog activities.  No small children are advised since he requires adults who will have the time to play and exercise him.  Sorry, couch potatoes need not apply.  Tracker would be ideal for a family that has experience in raising dogs.  He is looking for a Pack Leader that can show him the way.  He is a “high drive and frustrated” dog.  However, the only thing that will remove his frustration is a positive and high-stimulus environment that will put this smart doggie brain to work!  When he works, he shines!

Tracker is a sweet boy! He came to GRR when his family’s life just got too busy for a big dog who adores lots of attention—and new baby in the home made him feel a little bit competitive.

Foster mom reports: “He’s a cutie who just loves to be with people. Attention is his favorite thing. He likes to cuddle with his foster mom & dad, and he never gets tired of being petted. He’s 100% reliably housetrained, he’s calm and well-behaved indoors (we already give him free roam when nobody is home), and he sleeps through the night without any accidents. He doesn’t seem to be bothered by thunder, either. Atta boy!!”

Tracker is working on his “jealousy issues” and making good progress. On his first day in his foster home, he felt insecure about the other dogs and grumbled a bit at his foster brothers—but he responded to a verbal correction from his foster mom, and now, a week or so down the road, he even invites play by giving a bark or three: “Hey! Let’s party!” (He did live with a girl Golden in his first home, too.) “He’s getting along better and better with the other dogs,” says foster mom.

He gets excited when it’s walk time, and he might even jump up a bit to get things rolling. Once out the door, he strolls along nicely on the leash. He likes to fetch (and even brings it back most of the time), and he loves, loves, LOVES to swim.

Tracker needs a no-small-kids family with time to walk him, pet him, play with him. (“And a pool would be a real plus,” says Tracker.) This boy thrives on affection and is such a People Dog! If you’re looking for a loyal friend to share your life, this Golden is for you.
