Went for a walk with my buddy Sweetpea.

Zappers cooling off on a hot summer day!

Oh! What a wonderful report on wonderful
Zappers, who switched foster homes last week:
Zappers might be older in age, but his spirit is as youthful as a newborn pup. His personality is huge. Friendly, sweet, he seems to want to do so much more than his age and weight will let him but he does remember how much fun everything is. He just makes you smile because he enjoys life so much. He’s bouncy and happy with everyone he meets.
He LOVES to retrieve, but you have to be careful ‘cause he gets so excited he forgets how old he is and his back legs can't keep up with his powerful front end and down his butt goes to the ground. It’s his right hind leg in particular that sometimes gives him trouble—bu t we hope that weight loss and supplements and increasing his muscle mass will help. In the meantime … we play close-up catch with Zappers sitting, and we play “roll the ball a few feet away” in the yard. Zappers is on a diet in hopes that his body will get in better shape to keep up with his youthful mind and spirit! He hasn’t been around water, but I think he would love it, so when it warns up we will give it a try. It would be great for his strength training.
He’s very, very sweet and calm in the house. Loves to have toys around to pick up and carry around. When he brings them to you he lowers his head so it's hard for you to get to the toy but when you raise his head or grab the toy he releases it. He's a good boy with his toys.
Zappers adores brushing… lies on the floor and says brush me more, brush me more! he also had a bath and was very, very good once I got him to go in the shower stall. He was like “why do you want me to go in that small space?” But with coaxing and cookies he finally went in, and when I started bathing him he was like “Oohhhhh! A bath! well why didn't you just tell me that's what you wanted?”

We hope to lower Zappers’s age by lowering his weight and building his strength. He so deserves to enjoy life as long as possible! He’d love to live with an older person or couple who wants a good friend in the home, someone to meet them with a smile in the morning and every time they walked in the door —a friendly face to remind them to Hey! Get out there and walk a few blocks every day and smell the roses!

It’s hard to find enough good things to say about this lovely gent. Excellent with other dogs of all ages.. .friendly & nice... everyone likes him. Zappers’s ability to make friends is very impressive! Even McCarthy the 112-pound Komondor liked Zappers immediately. If you can pass the McCarthy test, you’re in like Flynn! Zappers was also good with a tiny Yorkie at his previous home—and his former owner reported he’s good with cats, too.
Zappers loves car rides, but of course needs a boost getting in and out. He’s lovely and polite on leash, but gets a bit stiff after an 8-block stroll. He doesn’t really play fetch, but enjoys toting a tennis ball or his favorite white ball around and showing it to us. He likes it when we comment about it.
Zappers is a delight in the house. He is so easy! He likes to hang out in the living room or near my office. He is totally trustworthy & never causes any destruction. He is calm & laid back & friendly. Sometimes I'll think of him and he'll pick up on my thoughts & start wagging his tail. When I talk to him & tell him things, he understands. He is very intuitive.
When he arrived in GRR care, Zappers’s teeth were just awful—very dirty, with some decay. He had a full dental cleaning and 2 bad teeth were pulled; he also had a mole on his eyelid removed (it was rubbing his eye a bit and causing it to water). He’ll feel better now that all that is taken care of!
Zappers just needs a happy retirement home, with someone who will appreciate what a great dog he is. He would be fine with tiny dogs, cats, large dogs, or older & calmer children. He gets along with everyone. He is pretty darn perfect! He is may be old and sedate, but he still has a twinkle in his eye.

Both Sweet Pea and Zappers are settled into their foster homes – many thanks to everyone who so generously offered to take them in. They’ve been to the vet for check-ups, visited the beauty parlor, and embarked on their health & fitness programs – both Goldens are aiming to whittle their waistlines by a pound or ten, and Zappers has a date to get his choppers scaled and polished till they shine. More updates coming soon!
Here are two wonderful, calm, loving oldsters who need foster families. Do you have room for Sweetpea, age 10, or Zappers, age 12? The two friends are coming to GRR from a loving owner who can no longer care for them. They’re both pretty Goldens and just as friendly as can be. They get along well with other dogs, and they like the family cats, too! Sweetpea is a curly blonde who adores children and “is just the sweetest dog. All she wants is attention. Just happy relaxing at your feet. Not high maintenance at all!” Red-headed Zappers is an all-around good old boy who is just as gentle and sweet as his friend Sweetpea. “At his age he still likes little walks—and he loves to fetch his big plastic ball!”
If you can give either of these super seniors a home—foster or forever—for the New Year, please e-mail surrender2@grr-tx.com. If you are already an approved GRR foster or adoptive home, that’s a plus, but if you aren’t, just visit http://oldsite.grr-tx.com/adoption/index.html, read through the information, and fill out the adoption application (the applications for adopting and fostering are exactly the same). We will do our best to speed you through the process!
