Kelsey’s pal Samson was adopted a week ago, but this
perky girl is still looking for a home of her own. Her foster mom sends this
report:
I’m amazed at how well Kelsey has adapted tobeing the only dog in the house. Initially, she did seem to be looking
around for Samson, but in no time she was back to being her usual self: namely,
a happy girl! She seems to be in a good mood all day, every day. Her tail is
always wagging, even when she’s just lying down relaxing. I can be talking with
someone in the other room, and I’ll hear that tail slapping the floor. It
doesn’t take much to get that Golden plume going—all you have to do is look at
her! It’s so endearing—and because she’s shorter than many dogs, she can wag
away without sweeping everything off the coffee table.
Kelsey loves to go on walks, and she’s a joy on the
leash. She’s quitedainty about not
pottying in public! She prefers to leave her “presents” in her very own yard. She hangs out with me while I'm on the computer; she chases whatever
moves in the backyard, but really loves to chase squirrels. When I leave the
back door open, she positions herself so that she can both watch the yard and
listen to see if there is something more interesting going on indoors. Clever
dog! Another nice thing about Kelsey is that she doesn't shed like Samson did.
She has silky red fur, and I’m not sweeping much up.
I think Kelsey would be fine on her own if she got
enough human company; she’d also do well with a laidback, non-dominant male
(like her “brother” Samson). She doesn’t seem to like tiny dogs that much,
though.
Friendly, attentive, energetic, and beautifully behaved
indoors—sweet Kelsey will make someone the perfect companion.

Here’s the latest on Kelsey:
This just in from Kelsey’s foster mom: “We had a good breakthrough this past
Friday night! I was dog-sitting two dogs from the neighborhood and had all four
dogs in the living room with me, watching TV. I had Kelsey on a leash, since I
can’t always tell when she’ll want to tell someone she is the boss. But she settled down very well and didn’t seem to mind sharing the house
with two more dogs. She did want a little more petting during that time, so
maybe she’s insecure around other dogs until she gets to know them.I was thrilled with how she behaved! Another cute behavior of the dogs
together: Kelsey will go up and start washing Samson’s head. One time it seemed
like she did it for more than 5 minutes! And he just lay there and let her to
it.
#03-051 Kelsey, update 1/10
“She is a go-getter!” says the vet. At Kelsey’s recent check-up (where she was
given a clean bill of health), he was amazed at how youthful she looks—much
younger than her 10 1/2 years. And her foster mom confirms that she loves to go
on outings. “She’s very good on leash, very quick with instructions, just a joy
to walk.”
Kelsey loves to tote her ball around in the house, and will bring it to you to
elicit a little game of fetch. You can take it easily from her mouth, and now
she’s also learned to drop it when asked to do so.
This little gal is wonderful with children, and calmly stands for pets and
attention. As for other dogs, she does need controlled meetings with those she
hasn’t met before, “but I think she is improving.”
Friendly Kelsey likes to follow you around the house and lie contentedly at your
feet; she’s not pushy for affection, but she does like to be close by. She is a
quick learner and a great companion.
#03-051 Kelsey, age 10
Weight: 46 pounds
Kelsey first came to GRR 9 1/2 years ago, as a
half-grown pup from the San Antonio pound. She arrived in our care the second
time just a few weeks ago, when her family called in tears: they needed to make
an immediate move to Chicago to care for ailing relatives, and simply did not
know what their living arrangements would be. Ultimately, theydecided the best
thing for their two GRR Goldens would be to return them to us for rehoming. And
in late November, Kelsey and her “brother” Samson (close in age, but no relation
to each other) moved into their foster home.
Kelsey’s foster mom sends this report:
Say hello to little Kelsey! She’s petite at 46 pounds – a full twenty pounds
lighter than her pal Samson. She’s the “alpha” in the relationship, though, and
he happily defers to her. And she did well with another mellow male Golden her
family had earlier, as well. In walking her around the neighborhood and seeing
how she responds, I just get the sense she is a little unsure about unknown
dogs. I think she could do well with another dog in the home, as long as it was
the right dog (calm, non-alpha personality) and as long as her new family
understands that she’ll need time to adjust.
Kelsey gets along with cats; she lived with a kitty in her former home. She is
learning that the cat in THIS house doesn't want her to be too friendly, though!
Kelsey may be ten years old, but she seems lots younger!—both in looks and
energy. She loves to carry her tennis ball around, engage in a good game of
fetch, and go on brisk walks (she’s a good walker on lead, too).
She is a calm girl—she loves attention, but she doesn’t demand it. And from the
very start, Kelsey adjusted to her new home and family. She sleeps in her crate
without a fuss. She is a good eater (not possessive about her food dish) and a
gentle treat taker. She follows me from room to room and likes to lie at my
feet. She likes being brushed and petted. She has let me trim her hair and nails
without a fuss. Anyone who wants a friendly, quiet companion who still has
plenty of pep for walks and fetch will be so happy with Kelsey!
