What could be nicer than an old Golden? Never an accident, no need to crate, reliable loose in the house, sweet and calm, sleeps through the night without a peep. The only issue  we have with him is that he likes to lie down smack in the middle of the kitchen floor, so he can be a real obstacle when you’re trying to cook! Of course, this is probably carefully calculated on Mattie’s part… he loves his food, and what better place to snag a treat than right in the middle of the action? Maybe some food will fall! (That’s what a watch dog is for, right?)

Mattie gets on A-OK with other dogs… he mostly ignores them, but has been known to fuss at tiny dogs if they try to get him going.  Nothing serious, just lets them know their place.

He likes to empty the toy box, but doesn’t seem to devoted to any particular toy; he’s not possessive of anything, really! He loves to be brushed and fussed over and stands quietly, just loving the attention. He’s trim and handsome & greets any visitors nicely, seeking his share of petting.

Mattie is a love and an easy keeper! He’d be a delight for anyone who loves the oldies.

Update: 11/30/10

Mattie has a lot of spunk for an 11-year-old.  He can hold his own in a game of  tug-of-war with a dog half his age! 

He’s calm with children, and will let them pet him.  He gets a little excited about seeing adults though, and will sometimes jump up on them.  At 83 pounds, he just has no idea how big he is.

Mattie is housebroken, good in the car, and walks pretty well on a leash.  He likes to play ball, and he actually brings it back and drops it so you can throw it again. 

He has a few bad habits that he has picked up over the years. He loves food (this may be obvious from the fact that he is 83 pounds), and if you’re not watching, he’ll steal food off the counter or even right off your plate! Mattie also likes to talk (bark).  He has a lot to say after 11 years!  Now if we could just figure what he’s saying…

Mattie would do well in a home with a younger dog who likes to play.  A few children to love on would be the icing on the cake!
