Breezy

Updated 11/16/10

The lovely Roxy (previously known as Breezy) is the most amazing dog... every day we are baffled by how anyone could have abandoned her! After a week or so of being very unsure of what was going on and if she might change homes again, Roxy settled in as the family shadow. Roxy loves taking her daily walks and going to soccer games. She gets SUPER excited once she hears the alarm go off on weekdays at 6 AM—but on the weekends, she is a fabulous sleep-in girl!

Roxy's fur is starting to look good after having to be pretty much shaved off due to all those ticks and fleas when she first came to rescue. She looks more like a Golden every day and is truly Golden in every way—such a lover, totally devoted and so sweet! The boys love the fact that she likes to run around the backyard like a maniac doing figure eights, making low growling sounds when she dips her shoulders to make the turns. If we had dressed Roxy up for Hallowe’en, she surely would have been an angel! Our most sincere thanks to everyone at GRR (especially her foster family—she still loves the Harry Potter blanket!) for taking care of Roxy before we made her part of our family!!!

Guess we need to add an addition to her story update I sent the other day.  Little Miss Thang loves to swim!!!  We got in the pool today with her for the first time.  It only took her a minute to figure out she could follow us up the deck steps and leap in.  Zero hesitation—might be a good or a bad thing.  She swam a bit, hung on us a bit and then seemed ready to exit so we showed her the ladder to get out.  She went back down the deck stairs, ran around the yard a couple of times, then ran back up the deck stairs and leaped in the pool again.  This went on for about 30 minutes before we gave up and all got out of the pool.  Until we can get a gate on the deck steps next weekend, Miss Breezy won't be spending as much as a minute outside unattended.  That's a disaster in the making.  We couldn't keep her out once she decided to come in.  This dog would LOVE a family with a pool or someone who would take her somewhere safe to swim.

What an adventure she had tonight—bet she sleeps the rest of the evening!!!

Breezy has been with us for a week now and is adjusting well.  She is super sweet and lovable.  It took her several days to settle in and realize that she really could come and go inside or out whenever she wanted, and that food and clean water was going to always be there when she wanted it.

She loves soft, squeaky toys and  often has several pulled out of the toyboxes and lying on the living room floor so she can grab a different one each time she walks by.  Breezy really enjoys chasing tennis balls and is generally very good about returning the ball for another toss.

Her skin is starting to heal from the flea/tick infestation—the only remaining scabby/sore spots are the ones that were the worst initially. She is still pretty itchy, but she has a ways to go on the antibiotics, so I think the itchiness will subside as her skin continues to heal.  It will be some time before she has a full, beautiful Golden coat, though—but it is already softening up and getting a little gloss to it as her nutrition improves.

Breezy gets along great with her foster siblings—a senior Golden and a senior field spaniel, as well as a 6-year-old mini dachshund.  She plays nicely with our two cats as well.  Occasionally she plays “chase the cat,” but she doesn’t chase aggressively, and she generally only does it when our year-old kitty initiates the game!

For the most part, Breezy is a pretty calm and laidback girl, and she sleeps through the night on her quilt next to our bed.  I don't think she even leaves the quilt during the night, because whenever one of us gets up at night, she’s always right there.

Breezy absolutely loves attention and will sit nicely at your feet for as long as you will keep rubbing her—but she is also a philosophical girl & understands that at some point all good things come to an end. If you stop petting her, she’ll just go select a toy or take a nap.  She's not demanding of attention at all.

Meal time is a breeze, so to speak.  She sits and waits patiently for me to get her food and eats like a dainty lady. No gobbling for this gal.

Breezy will make a wonderful addition to any home!

GRR’s goal is to make every dog’s life a breeze. “Relax and leave the worrying to us” – that’s our motto. (Well, one of them anyway.) And no dog needed someone to fuss and worry over her more than Breezy. She’d apparently been the “house dog” for a group of college kids, but they didn’t take much responsibility for her care, and when they moved away at the end of the first summer term, they left her behind. For almost a month the little dog stuck it out at the empy house, drinking rainwater and eating garbage to survive. Finally, the property owner called Animal Control. “This one will really need our help,” said the shelter rep. “She’s starved down and tick infested. Sweet as can be. I’ll definitely hold her for you.”

The good news is that Breezy is basically a healthy little gal—she just needs lots of nutritious food and lots of love. Right now she’s just covered with scabs and flaky spots from all those ticks and fleas, but soon enough her skin will be smooth and her fur will start to shine. And best of all, she’ll have the easy, breezy, fancy-free life that every Golden deserves.

More news as we get to know Breezy better!
