Savanah

Updated 12/16/10

Savannah is all dressed up for the holidays in her special reindeer head-dress! She looks adorable, but you can tell from her rather grim expression that, as her foster mom says:

She's not thrilled and thinks closing her eyes will make it all go away! In the pic where she’s lying on the grass you  can just see her thinking, “Sigh, do we have to do this AGAIN??”  Despite her long-suffering air she is actually hyper-alert and has her eye on our cat! Final pic shows her free of the hated headgear and trotting across the yard with her typical cheerful smile. Just wanted to show what a happy girl she is when not being forced to play dress-up. (:

I’m still he-e-re (she says while batting her eyelashes).  Still waiting for Rhett to sweep me off my feet and take me away to my very own plantation.  Or my knight in shining armor to take me to his castle.

In the meantime, I’ve been learning some new things.  I have to admit that I was a little spoiled and sheltered before, but only because my master loved me so much.  I’m even starting to get used to that other big golden hairy beast with four legs… is that a dog?  Is that what I look like?   And that small striped short-haired beast with four little skinny legs… is that a cat?  It’s fun to chase until she turns around and takes a swing.  I’m smart enough to keep out of reach of those claws.  I’ve also been around a “little person” or two… I think they call them toddlers.  I can be nice and gentle with them.

I also wasn’t so good in the car, but I’m getting better.  I’m really good on a leash and I love going for walks.  I should say that I need to go for walks so I can shed a few pounds.  I did tell you that I was spoiled, and I admit that I loved my food.  But I know that I’ll feel better and look better when I’m a little thinner.

Yes, I’m always the little lady, and I like to keep myself impeccably groomed.  My foster mom thinks that I run around the yard like an idiot sometimes, but I’m really looking for the bidet.  Where did they hide it?  Since I haven’t found it yet, I have to dance around in the grass before I can relieve myself, and then I use the grass to wipe myself clean.  A bidet would be so much more sanitary (if any of you could convince her to install one).

I would love to be your only gal, but I’d be OK if you had another dog as well.  I’m very adaptable and smart.  I’m not just beautiful, you know.  I’m very loving and very giving, and I’d love to give to YOU!

Savannah—could she have possibly been more appropriately named?  She seems to channel Scarlett O'Hara!

Savannah is looking for her Rhett—but a Rhett who will give her a happily-ever-after, of course!

Savannah’s previous owner treasured her and cared for her well—so well, in fact, that sometimes she's not quite sure she's a dog versus another human.

Given the graces of the Southern Belle, she has impeccable behavior while in and out of the foster home.  She keeps herself utterly clean, always lets her chaperone know when she needs to be “attended to" outdoors, and just blends right in with whatever situation she finds herself in.

Like any beauty, she loves to be brushed, combed, and bathed.  She’ll even wiggle around to make sure every spot gets brushed to a shine. And naturally, she’s had dance lessons and loves to show off her fancy footwork. When she heads out into the garden for nature calls, she likes to do a series of tight twirls that would make anyone else’s head spin. Can’t you just see her in a hoopskirt??

Give her coquetttishness, she does love to be doted upon.  Could you even envision Scarlett O'Hara, with all her beauty, wanting to share her chosen one’s attentions with another? Neither does Savannah!   She would do wonderfully as a singly-doted-upon Golden!  She does love being with humans and will let the two-legged ones know when they've left her behind in another room. She just wants so much to be a part of your life, as she had been with her previous owner.

Please don't let Savannah have to utter those words: "Rhett, Rhett, whatever shall I do?" She will add joy and love to your home!

We're all hoping not to have to hear "My dear, I don't give a damn.” Savannah is so well worth "giving a durn" about!

Savannah would be a perfect dog for a family who doesn’t want to go through the puppy phase, and would prefer a calm, gentle, and loving Golden.  She doesn’t need to play ball for hours on end (like a younger dog), she’ll sleep the whole night through, and she’s happy just to please her human companion. And she loves children and is very gentle with them—so visits from small children would be right up her alley.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, Savannah’s owner made a difficult decision: he asked GRR to find a new home for his Golden Retriever, the dog who had been his best friend and companion for nine years. “Savannah loves every single person she meets,” he said. She’d obviously been very well loved and well cared for—and it shows!

“She is great,” says her foster mom simply. “An absolute lady, great in the house. Perfectly housetrained. Loves grooming and turns herself this way and that to get more. Likes tummy rubs, all kinds of petting. Good on lead, hardly pulls at all.”

Savannah has never lived with other dogs and maynot quite realize what another dog is! For that reason, she can be  bristly with unfamiliar dogs. She’s just a bit frightened. She’d love to be the only dog in your home; she would be the perfect loving pet for an older person or couple who would give her regular walks (she needs to shed some pounds), brush her to her heart’s content, and just enjoy her company & give her a wonderful retirement. For such lack of exposure to other dogs and such upheaval in her life, she’s adjusting well in foster care—and we think she’ll settle into her forever home pretty easily, too.
