Godfrey
We said good-bye to our darling, Godfrey this morning. He
was euthanized
for a long list of health issues; it was time to let him go.
He liked cruising the back yard, Nightly Dog Drives, ice cubes, homemade
soup, and ear rubs.
Godfrey had severe Spondylosis Deformans (bridging of the spine), so he
moved like the crippled & aged fellow that he was. He massaged his itchy
ears against many a shrub, nearly annihilating our prized Japanese Maple;
until we barricaded it with lawn chairs. ;-)
Godfrey was a Night Owl, tromping & panting through the house at 1:00 a.m.
Consequently, he was an excellent nap taker. If I couldn't sleep & moved to
the couch, Godfrey gallantly kept watch, resting his chin on my shoulder &
blasting his hot breath on my face. Funny, how endearing it seems now.
Godfrey was a long, tall Texan...our gentle companion...our bright smiling
optimist. He loved us & we all loved him back.

Sweet. Gentle. Kind-hearted. Non-combative. Smiles. Loving. Appreciative. Friendly.
Is there a special home out there for a wonderful older gent with back problems? He is too old and fragile for little kids, too sore from his back to chase balls or go for walks, but oh how he loves car rides! Once lifted in he is happy to motor along, looking out the window. And we can tell he was really into balls as a young dog: he lights right up when we roll a tennis ball slowly to him. When Godfrey has a ball in his mouth, he acts as pleased as punch. :-)
Now that he has been with us for 10 weeks, Godfrey’s appetite has perked up, though we are still trying to add a few pounds to his skinny frame. He’s on a combination of meds to help his sore back, and they’re helping. He naps a lot and just enjoys his retirement. Godfrey is a great dog & we sure love him.

Fans of the 1930s comedy “My Man Godfrey” will at once see the parallels
between THIS Godfrey and the film version. Just like Godfrey Parke in the famous
movie, Godfrey Golden comes from the cream of high society (that’s what WE think
anyway) but was discovered as a penniless, homeless fella residing, if not at
the city dump, then out on the streets. It is entirely possible that he, too,
“having been burned by an unhappy romance, dropped out of life, taking up
residence in the dump. Here his faith in humanity was restored by his fellow
indigents, who managed to survive and remain optimistic despite the worst
deprivations.” …. Well, OK, since he is a Golden, he probably never lost his
trust in humanity or his optimism in the first place! And his faith was
rewarded, because his hard times are over at last.
Godfrey had a luxury bath and a barbershop style & trim as soon as he left the
pound, and now he’s in his foster home, where he has his pick of soft beds. What
a treat for old bones after so many weeks spent sleeping rough! He is a sweetie
and couldn’t stop smiling after he got out of the shelter.
Godfrey is a skinny, tall guy who is eating hearty to make up for lost time. His muscles are wasted, but with just gentle strolling around the yard and up & down stairs he’s building up again slowly. He spends a lot of time just snoozing peacefully—because he knows that when he wakes up, there’ll be something good to eat, something interesting to see or do, and someone nice to give him pets and loving words. Life is grand!
