McKenna

Updated: 02/25/10:

She is a golden ball of light and love!!

Have you have seen “Up” (the Disney/Pixar cartoon)? We always laugh and refer to her as Dug (the Golden Retriever  in the movie). “I just met you and I love you.” That is what McKenna would say!

McKenna  pretty much loves to be loved. There is no other word in her vocabulary but “love.” She spends more time on her back trying to get a belly rub that she does on her feet. She loves to be with you. I accidentally let her out of the house the other day, thinking she was my Golden Retriever (same color and height). She didn’t run away. She just hung out, walking around with me. I had to pretend I wasn’t freaking out on the inside and thanking the Gods of tennis shoes I had my running shoes on so if she took off I could catch her.

She plays all day with our blue heeler  puppy (a hyperactive, alpha female), and she never loses her patience when the pup plays a little too rough.

McKenna  is always on her own time. Laid-back, happy as can be ALL the time. Always happy to see you, go on a walk with you, be loved by you. She does really great on walks, pulling just a little, but we have learned a trick with her that we will teach her forever family! We have walked her up to 3 miles. She definitely needs exercise and mental stimuli, because she will chew things if she gets too bored. (Not a lot of things, mind you, but the odd item here and there.)  We haven’t had any problems with counter surfing, though. McKenna doesn’t beg, and when she wants to be loved and you are busy doing something else, she knows when to walk away.

McKenna is an active girl and a happy girl, and she will make someone the perfect friend!

Update:01/05/10:

Just a quick note –  Her foster mom comments, “She’s such a sweet girl I can’t imagine that there isn’t a family out there looking for a dog just like this one.”

Update 09/08

McKenna has been busy widening her social circle. Her foster family reports:

We had visitors for the Labor Day holiday, so we found out that McKenna is great with teenagers. That same weekend, she went to the vet for a check-up and rode calmly in the car to and from. At the clinic, she met many dogs. She did just fine and allowed them to sniff her all over, no problem. That’s not surprising, actually, since she gets along great with her Golden foster sister Rainy. It took McKenna a while to start playing, but now the girls have a great time wrestling on the floor. It’s fun to watch them!

Another thing we found out this weekend is that McKenna  doesn’t  care a bit about thunderstorms. That is happy news!

Clever McKenna is living up to her reputation as a counter surfer. She’s a sly one, though, and waits until nobody is looking. A plate of cookies was taken from the counter this weekend. We thought they were out of reach. Not a crumb was left on the floor.

At the vet, McKenna  got a good report, though the vet does recommend a bath every two weeks or so with oatmeal shampoo to help with dry skin. Her fleabite dermatitis is way better, though.

Are you ready to add this pretty girl to your home? She is eager to meet you soon!

McKenna and her friend Abigail came to GRR from a loving owner who was moving out of state to a small apartment and couldn’t bring the two girls along. Each dog came with a looseleaf binder of vet records and documents—and lots of stories about the funny things she’d done & how happy she had made her owner.

McKenna’s foster family says:

McKenna is an active gal but somewhat laidback when comes to playing. Our GRR girl Rainy is high-energy and has tried to entice McKenna to play. This weekend—days 16 & 17 in our home—was the first time that Rainy finally succeeded! McKenna does like to stick close to Rainy in the house, and she definitely looks for food on the counter and will raid trash baskets. (Her former owner told us how McKenna once investigated the Thanksgiving shopping, removed all the little French’s dry gravy mix packets, opened them, and then thoughtfully sprinkled them all over the floor for all the family pets to enjoy!)

She likes soft toys and enjoys chewing on her hard chewbone. And she  LOVES to be brushed. We’ve given her a couple of baths and she did well with that and didn’t even mind the hair dryer.

McKenna is a sweet dog and will be a loving companion for your family!

(One note: Abigail and McKenna were taught to hunt & retrieve by their first owner, so a no-cat, no-bird household would definitely be best for them.)
