Hera

We rescued Hera & Zeus & their 7 puppies from a ranch in the Kerrville/Fredericksburg area, after they were abandoned by their owners.  I’ll never forget when a team of GRR’s earliest volunteers bathed & de-ticked the family in my driveway, before we delivered them to the veterinarian.  The puppies were adorable & I still hear from some of their families.  Gary & I fostered Hera, and she was one of my all time favorite foster dogs.  Hera was accepted into South West Guide Dogs (now Guide Dogs of Texas) & went through their training.  Her personality was too soft for her to be a guide dog, but SWGD loved her so much that they kept her on as their Ambassador.  She lived with Mary Anne & Alfred Michaud, putting on presentations to school children.  Mary Anne & I have kept in contact, and from Mary Anne’s many updates, we can be sure that Hera had a wonderful life.

Thanks,

Margo

Dear Margo & Gary,

Enclosed is a check in memory of Hera.  She developed bladder cancer and on December 17th we helped her go peacefully to sleep.  Forest Creek Animal Hospital was wonderful – gentle and comforting.  I really miss Hera.  She had been doing so well for being 13 years old.

Hera had a long happy life, as you probably know.  Guide Dogs of Texas trained her, but she didn’t want to be a guide dog, so she became a Spokesdog and she and I talked to at least 2,000 people about guide dogs and blindness sensitivity.  She and I even went to talk to children in Round Rock about the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter.

When we were getting ready to go to a speaking engagement, Hera always knew, especially when she saw me getting out her jacket – and danced around and around yodeling a happy song.  She hopped happily into the car and loved the ride there.  Not once did she object to being petted by lines of children, even when one little boy was afraid of her and ran away.

We went to an event once where she wore a red hat and a purple jacket.  She left her hat on just long enough to be introduced on stage and have her picture taken.

Many thanks to you and Gold Ribbon Rescue for helping Hera and all the other dogs you save.

Best Regards,

Mary Anne Michaud
